Mighty Craic Online

Mighty Craic Online

Does anyone want to contribute to the 'Mighty Craic Online'? It's just an idea of mine, and it goes like this : the original Mighty Craic project is officially still on, but there's no estimated time of completion, so - in the meantime, anyone who wants to submit their original or subsequent contribution can mail it to me (by e-mail or regular post), and I can put it up on a sub-domain of my http:/worldfiddlemusic.co.uk site. The content will then be available to any and all of 'thesession.org' site members, for playing or downloading.

At the moment, this should not affect the progress of the original project. All I am offering is a chance for members to share their tunes and music with everyone else. To make a sensible presentation on my site, I would need as a mimimum for each contributor :

1 Music files (eg mp3 audios, video clips)
2 Name (site name or real name)
3 Approximate location

Other items like text descriptions, profiles, background, photos would obviously enhance the presentaion, but providing these extras would be up to the individual making the contribution.

To my mind, one advantage of this approach is that contributions would be available fairly quickly (they simply get added to the site as I receive them), so no long waits (there won't be an awaited completion date).

What say you all?

Any general comments or questions, just post them here. If there's anything specific to you which wouldn't be relevant to the rest of 'thesession' members, please email me off list.

Cheers

Jim

I think it's a very generous offer, thank you! I would love to contribute and download others' tunes. I think the plan is fine and needs no changes. Mark

Dibsing:

LIstening Tunes: Da Fullriggit Ship and Da Newriggit Ship

I should have them to you sometime next week, jim.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I would like to voice my support for this venture. How can Jim manage to do all this hosting for free? Or maybe I shouldn't ask.
About how many mp3's do you think you would have space for, Jim? If space becomes an issue maybe you could clean them out every month or two and then get new submissions. That would give everyone time to download what they want and make up their own Mighty Craic compilation CD.
Anyway Jim you're a star.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I think it a really good idea. Thanks for starting it off Jim. In the long term it could get bigger than any one server could host, so it may be worth thinking about how it could be spread over several servers and accessed via a (central or distributed) database.

Great idea! I sounds like the kind of thing that could grow REALLY quickly, though. Good luck!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Well I've just rediscovered my original recordings and think it's damn well high time the world got to hear them. You've all been missing out for so long. Acually, when I first made and listened to them they made me cringe, now they don't seem so bad and even have some redeeming features. Perhaps age is dulling the brain ...

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Mattrick, it's already started...I just need the audio / video tracks from you, and I'll put them on the site right away.

People - Jeremy very sensibly removed my e-mail address from my original post for security reasons, so just contact me through my via my 'thesession.org' profile, then you'll get my e-mail address.

About web space - we'll see what the response is like. If it gets full, I'll download & remove the oldest stuff first, so everyone get a chance to download what they want. it's hard to quote space figures at the moment till I start receiving stuff.

If people are sending several items, please let me know the order of the favourites, just in case I have to restrict them due to space.

So, everyone, fire away, and keep 'em coming!!! :-)

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Having the IT skills of a flip flop, can someone tell me:
1 How can I record to my pc (Windows XP)
2 How do I convert into MP3 format
I' m not embarassed asking this, really, not much anyway.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

You can plug a microphone into the socket of your sound card and use the sound recorder (one of the 'Entertainment' programs) record yourself.

There are several digital audio editor rograms you can download on a trial basis which will record stuff for you, you can also do some good editing on them, including removing background noise, and converting file to MP3 format. I used 'Goldwave':

http://www.goldwave.com/

Good luck!

Martin.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Hi Len... I downloaded a program called Cool Edit Pro, and after fiddling and fartin' around with it i got the hang of the basic functions and a few advanced ones... I have a 99.00 microphone (that's CDN $) that's plugged right into the mic input jack on my laptop. It took some messing around with and trial and error but i got the hang of it... the beauty of the progrram is that you can multitrack.. which means you can record something and then record another part over it... if you go to the thread called "hosting mp3 demos" i've got 3 tracks up there that you can listen to.. i did them using all that I described above.

Hope that helps :)

And Jim.. Im' going to send some stuff your way if you don't mind :D

# Posted on January 15th 2005 by Mattrick

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Oh one more thing... you can "bounce" all of your session into an mp3 with the click of the mouse... the program does it for you. it's great.

# Posted on January 15th 2005 by Mattrick

Re: Mighty Craic Online

A wee word of warning to prospective self-recorders; I bought a cheap microphone (3 Australian Dollars - what a tighta@se!) and tried recording direct to PC. The sound wasn't bad apart from the fact that the Beach Boys appeared to be backing me up. It completely baffled me for a couple of attempts - was my trial copy recording software adding a backing track?

Then I realised my cheap microphone was picking up the local radio station as well as my squeezings. The lead from the mic to the jack socket wasn't screened (didn't have a metal shield around it which is connected to the earth connection of the PC via the jack plug, for those of a less technical bent). Out came the Alfoil, and one bodgy wrapup and wedge in with the plug job later all was hunkydory.

Moral of the story - perhaps the X-files fans are right. The Beach Boys are stealing our thoughts!

Eno ;-)

How do we access other people's uploaded mp3's??? Can you give us a URL. I have looked at your website and the tune section is obviously not what we are to look in, as that is for the tunes you are teaching.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Go Conway - Well done.
Top of the charts this time.
As for Mattrick - I have already commented on his playing and won't repeat myself againagain. I might just get around to submitting my offering but it's guitar again and I wouldn't like to see two guitar postings and one flute - it might give folks the wrong impression.
As an accompanist I am used to holding my peace when needed!

# Posted on January 17th 2005 by Donough

Re: Mighty Craic Online

On second thoughts I did just listen to the Mattrick offering and I thought it was going to be the same as what he already posted on the other site - guitar. I now find that his posting is a full band composed of himself - methinks this man is dangerously talented. Great work.

Jim - you're a feckin' hero!
After all these years, suddenly there's faces, and tunes. The Mighty Craic CD is rendered irrelevant at a stroke!
I've sent you some inebriated tootling, to bring the standard back down to earth.
Great to hear Conway, and Toni. I just love to hear other flute players!
Thanks again Jim!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Jim -

Way to go!

Do you accept songs too, or would you prefer to keep it just tunes?

# Posted on January 18th 2005 by ketida

What's keeping you?

I refer my learned friends to the discussion posted yesterday:
http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/5539

Has anyone else contributed to the Mighty Craic Online, or is my ugly mug going to be stuck at the top of that page for good?

What happened to Aaron Aardvogel, the mighty South African uilleann piper, or Brendan O'Billygoat, the dynamic yet sensitive bodhrán beater from Ballybunion?

Zina and Will, count your lucky stars you've got an alphabetically advantageous monicker and get your MP3s up there pronto, or do I have to call the guards?

# Posted on January 18th 2005 by Conán McDonnell

Re: What's keeping you?

Speaking as Fergal O'Flutestrangler, I sent Jim a sample of my attempts at flutatio only yesterday. I expect he was so appalled when he heard the abuse to a couple of hithero innocent tunes that he is still unable to bring himself to update the website.

I'd be happy to send a tune off to Jim, but I honestly have no way of recording myself. I'll see if I can beg a friend the loan of their minidisk recorder, but that may take a week or two.

Re: What's keeping you?

You could always go incognito like Q.

Will, nice one. Any idea which tunes you're going to record?

Re: Mighty Craic Online

To those that have the original mighty craic recordings: please send them to Jim! An online resource was always going to be the best way to do this, but the killer was always lack of hosted space.
This is loads better - I might actually hear the thing!
Plus I've got no excuse for not sending a recording now given that I completely failed before...

Jim, you're a star!

I think Sandy is sending a cd of the original tracks off to Jim, but if he doesn't, then I will (or I can put them up there onto your server if you want to trust me with your server info, Jim, to save time and effort and all that).

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Hey Jack, I think I can help you out with the name of that "Gan Ainm". I liked the authentic pool table sound effects. It did take me a while to realise it was a looped recording tho :-)

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Just a person

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I beg your pardon, Orson. The pool sounds weren't looped -- WE were looped. We flew Fangface in from Montreal to play guitar with us that night, by the way. That's her screaming, "SHUT UP!!!" at the end of the tape because she thought she was playing really "fasht an' bad" and wanted everyone to hear how brilliant she was. She sounds just like a guy yelling huh. Weird!

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Phantom Button

Re: Mighty Craic Online

"fasht an' bad"? that could be the second quote from Kerri to make it into my profile. I don't know about "fasht", but I can do "bad" any day. Maybe I'll play some of my favourite Olde Worlde jigs. I dibs either Frost Is All Over/Connaughtman's Rambles or Des Hurley's Jigs. Although if I haven't got round to it by the end of February I'll throw them all back in the pool :-)

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Just a person

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Actually, Patrick Ourceau gets credit for "fasht and bad" and he got it from somebody else whose name I recognized but promptly forgot. And it doesn't mean good-bad. It means bad-bad and signifies "tunes played too quickly and devoid of any subtlety, nuance, or skill". Not something people are generally supposed to show off.

Anyway, Jack, I thought I did a nice job of keeping up with you guys. I have to admit, at first I found the whole idea of playing with such a talented group intimidating.

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Kerri Brown

Re: Mighty Craic Online

You know what, Kerri, your guitar intro is awsome. And I don't know if anyone noticed, but I'm playing two instruments at the same time. For that reason you can't hear either of them, but that's ok -- it was the performance that was important.

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Phantom Button

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I thought you were only boasting - calling your whistle a "flute" and your ukelele a "concertina", and I assumed you got crafty and pulled a showy instrument switch between the A and (uh...) B parts.

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Kerri Brown

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Wow Jack, that sounds like a very West Coast tune, is it what you'd call a slip-hop jig?

# Posted on January 25th 2005 by Ottery

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Mark, close. It's actually an obscure tune type only heard in tents that are sometimes set up out on the Burren known as a slippery-hoppity jig. Nice huh?

Actually, I believe Kerri took a guitar lesson from Phoebe one time. She also attended one of Phoebe's tune naming workshops. You don't name tunes things like: "Better Off Without Him" and "The Cheating Bastard" unless you've had expert instruction on such things. I think Kerri might have even done a gig at a maturnity ward with Phoebe once.

Or maybe mischief.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Sheesh. And here I was trying to humiliate you.

# Posted on January 27th 2005 by Kerri Brown

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I love it when you humiliate me, Kerri -- especially when you have your whip and you're wearing those stilettos. (raises eyebrows)

Bad dog. Sit. Stay. (yanks on leash).

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Jode -- I didn't realize there was another tune titled, "The Glens of Atherlow," I'm only aware of Sean Ryan's tune by that title. Nice playing BTW.

# Posted on January 31st 2005 by Phantom Button

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Thanks MM! I'll send the tune title to Jim and he can update it. I knew someone would have the name for it.

Jack, your note stirs the memory that I first learned the Glens from Kevin Burke on the recording "An Fhidil". I later heard Fred Finn playing it and adapted the version somewhat. I am not sure if Fred had a name for that tune.

I just did a quick search and I see Will posted this tune as The Dash to Portobello. Oh, and there is a similar version called the Ebb Tide posted by Mikea that he took from the Fred Finn Peter Horan recording.

Just shows to go yeah that I should do my homework!!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

And thanks for the compliments too, although undeserved. What is both wonderful and painful in this musical life is that one continues to grow and change, hopefully in the right directions. As that recording gets older, will I become more critical of it, or less?

(note that it is the recording getting older, not me!)

# Posted on January 31st 2005 by Jode

Re: Mighty Craic Online

The compliments were not undeserved in the slightest, Jode - and let me add mine. I hope your Mom enjoyed it half as much as I did!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Hey, where is everyone else? I thought others had tracks ready since you all discussed this before!

I even sent a note along with my submittal to say "have I been a session contributor for long enough to submit a track, since I was not around for the last Mighty Craic invitation?"

More music please!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I agree Jode; let's hear from Zina, Will, Dow, Grego, etc. And what about the guy who's putting this whole Mighty Craic Online thing together... and Jeremy for feck's sake -- my God! (Sorry, I got a bit worked up there... I'm ok now.) And I think more folks should have tracks recorded live at their session, like my one, where you can hear the mighty crack of the pool balls in the background, glasses breaking and the crowd adulation and stuff. C'MON YOU GUYS!!!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I can see why you find it so upsetting Jack, since you worked so hard on your own submission...

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Some of the stuff from people mentioned is on the CD that we're waiting to get to Jim Dorans. It'll get there. Cool your jets, kids. ;)

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I DID work hard on my submission -- you saw the fangs!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Well, I'm afraid that as soon as I complete my top secret Uilleann Poodle Project the Fangy photo will be a thing of the past.

Why did the hornpipe cross the road?

To get to the other slide.

Bugger. Wrong thread. Oh well, I'm not repeating it.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Kerri, you can't remove your fang-photo now because it's referred to in this thread. You'll frustrate and confuse future readers.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

But then where will I put my uilleann poodle? :^(

Re: Mighty Craic Online

"CD that we're waiting to get to Jim Dorans" ..

Since I was but an infant when I created my original Mighty Craic submissions, I'm hoping to record a fresh track this week to send to Jim to avoid embarrassment. So, Jim, please hold off on transferring my stuff from the CD?

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Uh... link it to your profile?

# Posted on February 1st 2005 by Phantom Button

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Yep, my original tracks are on that CD too.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

So that means we never get to hear it then eh? ;-)

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Sorry, there's no guarantee Jack. Perhaps if it escapes, I'll just say Kerri posted it on my behalf.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

If you get Kerri to do one for you you'll be lucky... they rock!

Re: Mighty Craic Online

Just thought I'd let you in on some statistics here, as in what the world decided to download from the Mighty Craic Online site, after looking at figures in my site admin account - remember, this is the top ten, and it's exactly what visitors decided to download just after seeing the pics, and reading the text, and the tune set names, without first having heard the audio (admittedly a large amount of visitors are members of thesession.org.....) The actual amounts of downloads per contributor average about 100 per month.

1 : Ceciltguitar - St Patrick's Day
2: Jim Dorans - Parkinson's Glory reel set
3: Kerri Brown (just the photo)
4: Conan Mc Donnell - Jenny's Chickens set
5: Jack Gilder - unnamed
6: MM - Deep Channel set
7: Donough - Carolans Draught
8: Grego and Gzeg - Geese set
9: Ketida - Willie and Mary
10: Jode - The Dawn set

Just the photo? Hah! That's a wonderful picture, Kerri. Can't deny that.

Re: Mighty Craic Online

I was wondering what happened to Jim and this Craic project. Have I missed something.
Also curious to see if an old thread can be re-threaded.

It's still up on Jim's website.
