What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
This thread is really just an excuse to share a couple of my favorite alternative housing websites. So either the title of this thread, or any the websites offered here (which really don't seem to fit into any of the "links" categories) can serve as a springboard into comments / discussion.
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
It seems that suggestions have been made to practice in one's bathroom due to acoutics of tile etc. If one takes that a step further I have (for imaginary venue) the following as a great spot for a sessions, white marble tile, beautiful view of the lake, etc.
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
historically, anyone elses 'kitchen' _i've got a thing about 'kitchen music'
and an open-air garage (pump station) at ballina's 2nd fleadh, 1998, which was ''the greatest lost session of all time'' _ask any of the heads that were there, but it didn't quite happen . . .
the imaginary venue exists only in the imagination of the imaginary-venue-imaginator
. . . and for my money, i'd plumb for a reduced band of players trying to make musical sense inside a discarded tea-pot in an english bluebell wood, before being evicted by the local robin, anxious to make home in the same pot _i've got a thing about 'tea'
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
puckin' hell. I think anyone's kitchen or garage, the Blythe, The Spailpin fanach, cross keys, etc. would beat any of those spaceship places shown on the first couple of links.
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
After having been in Ireland for the past 5 weeks… playing tunes every night -- I've seen a lot of great venues for a session. Each one had a quality to it, and in most cases some sort of minor drawback as well. For example; Cruise's in Ennis is great and has stellar musicians, but the fire is raging so much that no one can sit comfortably on that side of the table without melting. The other side has a sort of island that takes up a lot of space. Brogan's is a great venue with brilliant musicians and the publican goes to a lot of trouble to help the session come off well. He tells people all day long and gets a good turn out of punters who come for the music -- so there's a great buzz. Furey's, in Sligo, is a great pub for tunes with a musically hip crowd, and bar-front access to the drinks -- you don't have to get up to order and collect your pints. The equation for a good session venue is some sort of formula that involves good acoustics, a quiet appreciative crowd, and the support of the publican.

The Watering Hole at Perranporth - a pub on the beach in Cornwall just a short stroll from the Lowender Peran celtic festival at the Ponsmere Hotel. The festival is in October and the pub is cosy but it would be a fabulous place to have a session on a hot summers evening.
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
I really enjoyed playing for dancers at the Irish Centre in Lewisam the other day, I thought it was even more fun that playing at sessions. I've never tried inside churches but would love to give it a go.
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
I liked playing for the dancers in Lewisham too. It's a nice reality check on how we're playing the music. But it did have the most echo/reverb of any venue I've played in. Maybe the new management will install a few flying saucers like the Albert Hall?
Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
The Climbers' Bar in The Old Hotel Dungeon Ghyll, Langdale, in the Lake District. A roaring fire, great food and beer, wet(usually) hikers and dogs and people telling tall tales about Jack's Rake (a particularly difficult scramble on Pavey's Arc).
The owner plays a mean mandolin and musos drop in on Wednesdays for a bit of a session.
I'll be there between Christmas and New year. Can't wait.

The pub where it is, but with no punters (or, you know what, of course)

A stone floored kitchen with a blazing range.
Or the forward- and backward-facing (as opposed to sideways) seats on a District Line train.

Re: What is your favorite real or imaginary venue for a session?
Don't say that michael, it might come back to haunt you. We just lost the Woodman due to literally NO punters in the back bar where we played!
Hey, mountain goat, what about sessions on buses from Blackheath to Catford?
