Prepaid International Phone Cards

Prepaid International Phone Cards

Hello - just back from an incredible time in Ireland. I extended my trip a few more days then planned. I didn't want to return home!

So, I want to stay in contact with some new music friends in Ireland. Can anyone in the US recommend a good calling card for Ireland and the UK?? I've heard of some cards with rates as low as 3 cents per minute!!! Any help will be *hugely* appreciated.

Re: Prepaid International Phone Cards

Joyce, if you have a decent connection, I recommend Skype www.skype.com.
Although best known for their free pc-to-pc phone calls, you can buy credit in similar fashion to phone cards for pc-to-landline calls.
Ireland landline is 1.7 euro cents/minute; costs (including Irish mobiles) are detailed very explicitly on their website.
We use it at work with great success.
You really need a headset with noise cancelling mike (not expensive) for consistently good calls, however I get by at home just using the PC monitor mike and speakers.

Not on commission but I ought to be!

Tell us about the trip, Joyce!

Re: Prepaid International Phone Cards

I suggest that you read the fine print very carefully. They often have expiration dates, weekly charges and other "hidden
fees" that subtract minutes from the face value of the card. We quit using phone cards a year or so ago when it got to the point that we were getting typically less than 20 minutes on a "2 hour" phone card.

Re: Prepaid International Phone Cards

Joyce, I stopped using call cards a while ago. What I now use (in the UK) is "phone-direct" where I key in an access number for the country I want to call (e.g. 084 4700 4700 for Belgium) and then the full international number of the call in Belgium. That works out at £0.04/min.

You can find out more about this system on http://www.phonecard-services.co.uk That service is UK-based but does provide a cheap call-back service from any country to another. I wonder if there is anything similar where you live?
