yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

(commercially available)

How about track 1 on Joe Cooley's album, where he plays the Wise Maid, and the crowd goes nuts. Best ever.

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Hiya Steph, this is Ken in Dayton-

That is a great cut. Picking my favorite track is like trying to hit a moving target. Just defining "best track" is a tough one to Craic. (sorry for the bad pun)

Right now I'd have to say my favorite track is "The Caves Of Kiltanon/The Quilty Shore" From Paddy Canny's Traditional Music From The Legendary East Clare Fiddler. But I just got a new Bobby Casey recording so it's likely I'll have a new favorite by tomorrow . :D

I'm probably alone and off topic, but Si Bheag, Si Mhor on Planxty "Planxty". I just can help but stop whatever I'm doing everytime this come on. I think about standing on the Burren, cold rain hitting your face looking out on the ocean.

It has to be the Bothy Band mega set that includes Martin Wynne's No. 1 and Rip the Calico.

Nice to hear from you Ken on this cold, rainy day - I'm suddenly remembering a lovely summertime flat session :-)

Ian - that set also contains The Enchanted Lady & The Holy Land - I highly recommend checking out Ben Lennon's recording of those two tunes on the "Natural Bridge". That's another track that stands out for me. If you ever get to visit the ITM Archives in Dublin, it's worth digging up Paddy Killoran's recordings of those tunes as well.

WHat about kidcharlemagnes' friend choking on a twix to St. Annes ?

Failing that the last track on If The Cap Fits ?

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

I can't think of any Planxty album that doesn't have a track that I would label as one of the best ITM tracks ever recorded. But then they are still one of the best ITM bands to date. Their arrangements are superb.

Try it for your self, pick an album and try not to say 'oooooohhhh yes that' , and 'ooooohhh that one !'

Exactly the same topic popped up some months ago: http://thesession.org/discussions/display.php/3984

My wife-to-be and I did in fact take a day trip through the Burren on just such a day as you describe.
We later found out that it was the remains of a hurricane that had passed through the US about a week before.

Best track recorded or best recorded track?

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Seconds the mention of almost any Planxty tune track, steering well away from those whining songs Andy Irvine wrote.

Hmm.

Cut nine from "Cold Blow And The Rainy Night"

The Hare in the Corn/The Frost is all over/The Gander in the pratie hole.

That's a fine set.

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Think of it this way: Your daughter starts dating a famous, well respected, extreemly talented, really nice young classical soloist. He's never heard traditional Irish music before in his life. What do you play him?

I'd play him Matt Molloy playing the Moving Cloud. His ears would pop and his jaw would hit the floor.

(And haha, can you imagine his eyes rolling at that dirge of a waltze Si Bheag, Si Mhor? Come on now, get a grip)

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Matt Molloy's Moving Cloud - brilliant !

But Michael do you have any heart for slow tunes ?

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Oh yes indeed, and since we're talking planxty, how about that slow air on words and music. (Donnal's Prophet 5 used to bug the hell out of me, but I've grown to love it)

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

Favourite [ there is no “best” ] instrumental track would be “Lord Gordon’s / Kiss The Maid Behind The Barrel “ by Conal O’Grada on Colm Murphy’s “An Bodhran” CD.
Favourite song [ by a mile ] “Sweet King Willamstown” sung by Cara Dillon on the 1st “Oige” recording. She would have been about 15 years old! [ Mind you, I haven’t heard oor “Nell” yet !]

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

What about the set by the Bothy band that starts with the turbo-charged Kesh jig?
Or to put a smile on your face, Planxty with The Good Ship Kangaroo?
Or anything off any Na Keen Affair .....

Re: yet another poll: best recorded track of ITM?

I would not know an answer to this quesition. The above mentioned Rip the Calico Set by the Bothy Band came to my mind immediately. But I have heard other music, which was exciting as well, only in a different way. The list would be as long as from here to the Moon.
