midwest ITM?

midwest ITM?

a general question, i know. but what are some midwest cities that have good ITM/sessioning (beside chicago)? I ask you all, of course, in my never-ending search for a college location. and i hope this topic isnt against the rules. thanks much.

Re: midwest ITM?

Bard, see Bloomington, Indiana (Indiana University, my alma mater!) and Champaign-Urbana (U of Illinois).

Re: midwest ITM?

I'll second the vote on Bloomington. I attended DePauw University in nearby Greencastle, IN for two years, and even though it was in the middle of nowhere, it was close to both Bloomington and Indianapolis for sessions. Many players travel around the triangle (Bloomington, Terre Haute, Indy) and so there are plenty of sessions to choose from. Don't know currently what sessions are going on and who runs them, but I sure hope that Grey Larson is hosting a session somewhere in Bloomington (he used to do a Borders session that no longer exists). So IU in Bloomington would be a great choice. Plus, they have the Lotus Festival each year which has brought some big ITM names in the past.

Re: midwest ITM?

Indianapolis has a great session on Tuesday nights at the Ace. Bloomington has an excellent and fun one at the Runcible Spoon on Sundays. I was a regular at the Ace for a little while (now live in NY) and had been to the Runcible Spoon on several occasions when we could make it down there. There are also a couple in South Bend, IN but I don't know much about them since I've never been to either.

Re: midwest ITM?

Any city that can support an Irish festival will have a good session scene. Milwaukee for one and the Twin Cities, from which I hale, has a healthy community.

Re: midwest ITM?

St. Paul/Minneapolis has a great scene and a bunch of colleges, including UofM. See the session list for more info. I think they are all covered there.

Madison was not mentioned above, and their weekly session at Mickey's is not listed.

Re: midwest ITM?

Bard,

Contact me via the site if you are interested in the Twin Cities and want to visit. We can at least point you in the right direction for tunes, or fill you in on the scene here.

I went to school in Madison and grew up in Milwaukee. Kate (my wife) went to school in Champaign and grew up in Chicago. So you might say we know a thing or two about the "upper" midwest scene!

Re: midwest ITM?

I'll second the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Three regular sessions (last I heard) and a slow-session.
