Northumbrian Pipes

Northumbrian Pipes

I'm serioiusly considering purchasing a set of Northumbrian pipes. I was thinking about a 14 key set from maker, David Burleigh. Does anyone out there have a set from him?
Any advice on buying a set of pipes is appreciated.
Also, whats a good book to use on how to play?

Cheers
Brad

Re: Northumbrian Pipes

Don't buy a Burleigh set!

Unless he has improved vastly in the past few years.

I had a set of his. The chanter was not even in tune with itself, and the general quality of manufacture was poor when compared with other makers. The maker displayed no interest in any sort of after-sales service at all.

Hrmmm... I know there's another guy out there, I hear he's pretty good, he makes a good number of pipes...

I think that's it, if it doesn't work, try google and type in Ray Sloan - Pipes or something.

Re: Northumbrian Pipes

try the northumbrian pipers tunebook, but be warned they are the most difficult things in the world to play. David Burliegh sets are quite good but a second hand set can be cheaper but harder to get hold of ;-)

Re: Northumbrian Pipes

Ray Sloan has an excellent reputation among us uilleann pipers, I am sure that his northumbrian pipes are up to snuff.

Re: Northumbrian Pipes

I just checked out Ray Sloan's web site, beautiful instruments. He has some nice pictures of the ones he makes.
I'm getting that feeling again before I buy an instrument. I'm trying to fight it. OH WHAT TO DO!!
