Hey, are there any bands or anyone out there around the London/Luton area who needs a banjo or mandolin player? I'm 19, and play Irish trad music. Ive been playing music overall for about 12 yeas, so have a fair bit of experience. I am the current Britain champion on the mandolin and banjo, and came 2nd in the all ireland championships. If you like I can send you a recording of myself.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Maybe he's just envious of you, Trad Girl. It's quite common for some of us old (and not so old) gits to threaten that we should go home and "smash our instruments" when we hear (or hear of) an exceptionally good younger player. I've got past that stage now and I'm quite happy to play for my own enjoyment.
Incidentally, you've reminded me of two excellent young Scottish musicians who also excel on these instruments; ie Anna Massie and Celine Donoghue. You should check them out , if you haven't heard them.
All the best and, hopefully, I'll get to hear you myself someday.

John J..
here you are... see next thread up...

Trad Girl... congrats.....
I have just figured out the string names on my banjo!!! (Walks off in a jealous rage!!) (-:
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
1 x Gibson TB100 1927
1 x Paramount C 1926
both beautiful...
except my dog knocked the Paramount on it's face and the head stock broke off ( was re- stringing it at the time)
Luckily for me, Paul (Guitar player) with Providence has just opened an instrument repair shop in Dublin... class guy, class musician, and by all means a class bloke repairing instruments..... would recommend him big time
Tom Cousins did a little work on the Gibson a short while ago.... both lovely.... tho I play schidt
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
i need to get a new one. I think I mentioned it. There is a guy here in Kent who does loads of all kinds. I think I will try there. I was also given the number of a guy in Belfast. i might try and visit there to sometime. I keep buying one, then im not happy with it i need to find one that is going to suit me from now on.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
You know there's a bloke called Paul Shippey from Bristol who makes handmade mandolins . . might be an idea to try and hear one . . . by the way my real name is P.Shippey . . . (just jawww king)
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Trad Girl, I'd love to play music with you, but it's not likely I'll be headed your way any time soon. I love to play music with people who are more accomplished than I, however, they seem to able to find others to play with them who are also better musicians than I.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Me too. It would be nice to run into you at a session sometime - I live in West London, so there's a good chance our paths might cross at some point. But by the sound of it I'd more likely be taking lessons from you than playing in a band with you.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Trad Girl, yes I am envious and I am an old git. Please don't think I was having a go at you as a person, I am delighted that there are people of your age who have an interest in "the music" and are carrying it forward. One of the problems for dinosaurs like me is that we havn't mastered the art of e-mail emotives or smileys or whatever they are called. Good luck to you.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
what's your "wicked" mandolin? i've got a 1930 epiphone tenor that rocks and an old "a" model gibson mandolin. if you ever get to the states then we should play some tunes.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
At the mo I have a F style AXL. I used to have a F Style gibson but did not get on with it. I find that it does not matter what what make you have, if the mandolin or banjo sounds and feels right, then thats all that matters. I tend to go for sound rather than make.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
I bought a 1970's Kay mandolin off Ebay Trad Girl.Woolworths used to sell them.It cost me £27. To me its as loud and sounds just as good and plays just as well as mandolins I've tried costing hundreds of pounds. It doesn't help matters though when you're stone deaf like I am , ah!
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
You sound like a real enthusiast, Trad Girl, who can actually play! Me? I am an enthusiast. I'd love to hear you but live much too far away....any recorded material?
In the midst of the discussion, someone mentioned Celine Donoghue from Glasgow who is well worth a listen. She made a cd "Something Else" which you'd enjoy though there is not so much banjo as I would have liked.
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
I am hoping to record a CD soon other than that I just have minidisc recordings hehe. I haven't heard of Celine Donoghue, but ill look out for her. What is it she plays?
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Celine plays fiddle and banjo. She used to play an Ozark banjo which marque usually suggests a factory produced, moderate quality instrument. It may be a great banjo, it may not, but Celine makes it sing like an Irish linnet. And, I guess that like yourself, she has youthful enthusiasm for her craft which overcomes any tendency to cockiness that afflicts some of our young ITM players: an infectious, innocent enthusiasm that only the younger players can really have when they are highly motivated and talented. If, as I suspect, you are one of that group, I shall surely hear you on CD some time and I look forward to that. But please do make sure that all your fellow sessioneers know about it!
Re: Anyone need a Tenor banjo or mandolin player???
Baggins- I own an ozark, their latest one dead heavy hehe so I had to purchase another one. It is this that I won my comps on so I say nothing wrong with Ozatk
