At the moment (fickle creature that I am), for instruments I play:
fiddle -- Kevin Burke
wire harp -- Patrick Ball
nylon harp -- Grainne Hambly
and for instruments I can't play:
mandolin e.f.a. -- Andy Irvine.
1. Someone's got to say it - let's hear for Martin Hayes (fiddle).
2. I'm not too well up in instruments I can't play, so I'll got for Matt Molloy (flute).
I don't like Martin's recordings too much...too swoopy for me, but I've heard some live recordings of him and enjoyed his playing. In general I go for more Sligo or Donegal styles (also love Tommy Peoples).
Fiddle: John Carty, Paddy Canny
(I also like Martin Hayes for his non-melodic improvisation (by that I mean improvisation using tonal shadings rather than melodic variation))
Guitar: Norman Blake
Mandolin: Kevin McLeod
Hey "Layers"
You mentioned guitar Norman Blake. Didn't you meant to say John Blake who is equally good on the piano & Guitar. A real top class accompanist.
AS a solo (guitar) instrument it has to be Tony McManus.
Paddy Keenan, and Jarleth Henderson(this kid is amazing!), also I am one of those who thuroughly enjoys Leo Rowsome's regulator playing (all three of these guys' acyually).
What can I say, I'm a softee for nice sounding regulators.
Harry Bradley.
Oisin MacDiarmada.
And Donough - John Blake isn't the only guitar player by that name."Layers" could well have meant Norman Blake, although I wouldn't say he's noted as an Irish musician.
Norman Blake is a really good American country/old-timey style musician who has written some really good tunes. I play one of his called the Cairo Waltz ...great tune.
Fiddle: John Carty,Kevin Burke,Aidan O'Rourke,Ian Cutler, Kevin Madden
Flute and pipes: Colman Connolly
Mandolin: Simon Mayor
Banjo: Cathal Hayden
Harp: Harriet Earis
Bodhran: Peter O'Brien
Guitar - many favorites, the one I would like to mention here, since he does play some ITM (as well as anything else that he wants to play) is Tommy Emmanuel. Live performance is highly recommended!
Nice plug for your band there Geoff!
Though I must say I find watching (listening to) Harriet play the harp is completely engrossing. She manifests an absolute sense of delight in whatever she is playing, which sort of of pulls you in.
That Colman's not bad either
I've got one Norman Blake album, but I'm not allowed to get it out because I get told off about Nancy's haircut and dress on the cover...
Ooh... didn't think to put Tommy Emmanuel on here, but he certainly is a master. Saw him live a few times, I'm trying to think if I ever heard him play ITM? There's nothing on his recordings, is there?
Going to see Tommy Emmanuel again next month - he's something else. His recording just don't come close to conveying what he is like live.
Haven't really heard him playing Irish tunes but he always plays a Scottish tune or two when he's up here.
At the moment:
mandolin: Kevin MacLeod
banjo: Gary Peterson
can't play fiddle but never heard a note from Aly Bain that I'd want played differently.
Fiddle: Hmm... Mairi Rankin, Wendy MacIsaac, Martin Hayes, Alasdair Fraser, Jennifer Wrigley, Rodney Miller
Pipes: Anna Murray (gotta love the smallpipes)
Guitar: Hazel Wrigley
And you've gotta love Natalie Haas' cello playing...
Favourites?
Favourites?
Who's your favourite player of your own instrument, and your favourite of an instrument you can't play ?
Or have you favourites ?

Re: Favourites?
This is almost as impossible as "Who's the best?" I have several favourites.

Here's a few possibilities.
Irish Fiddle:- Liz Carroll
Shetland:- Catriona McDonald
Danish:- Harald Haugaard
Mandolin:- Simon Mayor (though not Irish)
Tenor Banjo:- Eamonn Coyne
Favourite musician on local Edinburgh scene:- Claire Mann
Many of those I've missed out are just as good in their own way and it all depends on my mood.
