What's in the case??

What's in the case??

Ok, just out of curiosity, what do you all keep in the case that carries your beloved Instrument, besides the Instrument?
In my Concertina box I usually keep a small list of tunes I know and sheet music with one or two tunes I’m learning.
A pack of smokes, eye drops for the smoky sessions I go to, lip balm, small bandana and a lucky charm that I got from a
temple in Kyushu Japan. With my Octave Mandolin it’s about the same, except I add a tuner and an extra set of strings.

Re: What's in the case??

I hope you have your membership documents for the "Low Caste Frowned-Upon Brotherhood Of English Concertina Players" in there too. What if you were to meet up with Dow? He'd want to see your papers.

Re: What's in the case??

Re: What's in the case??

No papers Jack, we in the “Brotherhood” have a secret handshake. Can’t tell you what it is, seeing as you’re not a member.
If I told you, I’d have to kill your Concertina. :-)
One way to tell a Brit Box player against a German Box player is that we have bigger thumbs. Hahaha!!

Re: What's in the case??

I'm gonna cheat a little here. Technically my flute case contains just the flute and some joint grease. However, I carry my flute in a bag that I received after studying abroad in Ireland. In that bag, I carry most notably a big folder that I refer to as my Irish music dossier. It contains everything from directions to pubs and people's houses to random sheet music to ABCs scribbled on paper scraps. Oh, and I just realized that the folder I use is the folder I received all of my orientation information in when I first got to Ireland. Guess that makes me both obsessive and sentimental.

Re: What's in the case??

Uilleann pipe case (formerly hard shell fiddle case with guts removed- dental floss, my popping strap, a humidty meter, a tuner (Korg), string wound about a pen, a chunk of bees wax, some leather scraps, some blue tack sticky stuff,

Fiddle case- clip on intellitouch tuner, rosin ( 1 large, 1 small), an almost complete set of strings, a loose bridge tuner thingee, a pen and some scraps of paper, and a green corduroy cloth to wipe the strings.

Re: What's in the case??

Fiddle case: Royal Oak rosin, hardwood clothes peg (the cheapskate's mute), brass mute (for lunchtime practice), some of my group business cards, my late mum's rosary, wipe-down cloth, spare string set, Walkman + CDs + tune printouts from here for lunchtime learning. Sometimes a shoulder rest, sometimes a tuner.

Guitar backpack case: Shubb capo, drop-D capo (sawnoff Shubb), box of plectra, ¼ inch lead, spare strings. If hiking to work, add purse, house keys, comb, Walkman, mobile phone, spare CDs, bus tickets in the little plastic name tag window and collapsible umbrella poking out the top of the zip-up bits-n-pieces compartment.

Guitar hard case: Kyser (Kynser? Kysner?) capo, another drop-D capo, more strings, more plectra and the last earthly remnants of my poor fat little blob of a white cat who lost his ears, and later had to be put down, due to cancer. (Can never bring myself to vacuum out the case. *sniffle*)

Re: What's in the case??

(Guitar backpack case also has a plastic bag big enough to fit the guitar body into in case I'm caught in unexpected torrential rain.)

Re: What's in the case??

In Denmark, some of the younger fiddlers apparently used to carry their instrument within a guitar case. It looked more "hip" than a fiddle case and they used the extra room to carry their beer.
I heard that story from the Danish broadcaster Alan Klitgaard but I don't know if it's true or not. :-)

Re: What's in the case??

Fiddle, bow, shoulder rest, comhaltaslive sticker (unstuck) flying around. In the small compartment in the case: a small bad rosin, a used good rosin, an unused really good rosin, original bridge, extra sound post, dark blue marble from somewhere, case key, mute, and list of tunes that we had to tape on to the backs of our intruments for an unprepared gig a few years ago. In the top pocket: Loads of old strings, ticket to a concert I played at, a form I was supposed to fill out with my comments about a workshop, a scrap of paper with the name of a CD I want to buy, more strings, program to the foresaid concert, scraps of ABC tunes, list of tune first lines for busking, small notebook, sometimes minidisk recorder and mic.

How many people had to go look in their cases??! I did!!

Re: What's in the case??

Fiddle case:

Fiddle (French 1890)
Red velvet cover to protect fiddle
Good bow (Adolf Hoyer 1890)
Crap bow (Skoda 1976)
Rosin
Toothbrush (for getting excess rosin off bow hairs and fiddle strings)
Sony electronic tuner (essential when you have TWO pipers in the band)
Two packets of Tomastik strings
Shoulder rest
Gig diary
Pen

Guitar case:

Martin Guitar Mmmmm!
Strap
Capo
Box of plectra, bottlenecks etc
Small pair of pliers (for cutting string ends)
Tube of Fastfret string cleaner and cloth
Two packets of those really good strings with a gore-tex cover whose name I can never remember (begins with E) as you have to buy them so infreqently. They last for months without losing their brightness.

Re: What's in the case??

Brad, you've obviously not met many anglo players. They're very different from us - apart from the thumb thing they're heavier-browed, and their knuckles trail on the ground when they walk.

Re: What's in the case??

Strings, capo, pick-up battery, bubblewrap, Gary Snyder poem, genuine Cambodian mud.

# Posted on October 7th 2004 by sergeant fox

Re: What's in the case??

I have some fake Cambodian mud (you can get it from the Fake Cambodian Mud Shop in Henley on Thames ...it's a specialist shop which does surprisingly well.

Joking apart (OK it wasn't funny) there IS a shop in Henley that sells Teddy bears and ONLY Teddy Bears. It makes a fortune. Bizarre.

That's what I've got in my fiddle case..

Re: What's in the case??

Depends on where you travel!

In the 80s and 90s, being stopped at various checkpoints, especially coming out of Derry, and having sqaddies see a load of pipes got a bit scary sometimes; I even had my little bottle of almond oil tested!

For example... on the Foyle Bridge, 2am after some great music in Buncrana, me being asked to open my flute case, Frankie, his pipes, and British troop carriers, guns all pointed at us, not the other direction at either end of the bridge...the askers here were the RUC.

Scarier still, at JFK in Jan 2002 (in a previous posting) and even had swab samples, shoes inspected etc., but this was shortly after the terrorist attacks in America - however when you are asked what all these pipes are, and you say you're a traditional flute player, it is not very nice to see a soldier stood with a gun pointed at you, looking like they mean business!

That's what I'd call the ultimate "What's in the case?"

Paul Moclair, Kenny, David A, and others who visit this site regularly, know that my case carries my music, my soul, my life!

Have fun!

My box case has a box, a whistle and the latest copy of New Internationalist!

Re: What's in the case??

Sam murray custom made flute box which just about fits my flute. Sewn onto the lining a miraculous medal which a German lady gave me (she found tons of them in a house in Leitrim) and a bit of silk cloth to put my flute to bed.
But in my bag, vaseline, whistles, tune list, plumbers tape for joint leaks and some food for when the nibbles strike during the session e.g. bananas - my friend actually brings sandwiches with her to sessions and packets of biscuits etc. She uses a lot of energy .

Re: What's in the case??

In my fiddle case, spare bow, rosin, tuning fork, spare set of strings, small tweezers (see threads on replacing strings for details on this), fiddle cleaning cloth,
nail file, photo of my late cocker spaniel, recent photo of my Belgian grand-daughter (aged 7 months), odds and ends of paper-work, occasional scrap of sheet music, and sometimes a miniature digital video camera for audio recording

Re: What's in the case??

My mandolin case has a mandolin and sometimes some spare strings as well as a bag of plectrums which mysteriously disappear when I need them. And sometimes a tune I'm supposed to be learning.

I've been pulled up on the strings at Heathrow cos they said they looked like detonators on the X-ray!And the metal resonator mandolin baffles them a bit too.

dust, dog hair and I'm sure a few of mine as well. :)

Re: What's in the case??

At a managers conference two years ago I won a nice BBC padded drinks cooler in none offensive blue. It has a soft divider running lengthwise splitting the interior in two, one section about 1/3rd of the width of the bag, the other 2/3rds.
The larger section fits my flute (already rolled in soft cloth), and a few whistles; the other bit holds two cans of 440 ml Woodstock (bourbon and cola) one on top of the other perfectly.
Aaaahhhh, two of life's simple pleasures side by side in my little BBC bag.

Re: What's in the case??

Violin, rosin in a little green pouch, khune chinrest, 'A' tuning fork with handle broken off (To use: Throw it up, flick it, listen carefully, catch, tune, repeat if necessary), three bows - two need rehairing and repairing, the third is the cheapest piece of crap you've ever seen but it works, finally the original tailpiece.

Re: What's in the case??

Aside from my guitar, I have new strings, used strings, capo, plectra (picks), wire clippers, tuning peg cranker, photos of me playing with Pierre Schryer and Patrick Ourceau from a festival years ago.
Question for Paul Godfray, what are the resin and strings for?

Re: What's in the case??

My accordion hard case doesn't fit much else when the aul bosca is in it apart from my camera, some Save the Goat stickers, a capo, some picks, a few tunes I'm learnin. Would like to get a sood soft case. Not as heavy and I could slip a naggin or a couple of cans in. A hard case is good too tho coz no matter who or what ya bash it off u know the bosca will be grand. And ya can use it as a seat when the pub is packed. And there's nice red fur on the inside of it - I've tried goin asleep in there between tunes at a late session but I won't fit.

Re: What's in the case??

I've often used my bodhrán case as a surrogate suitcase; the bodhran is so deep that there's loads of room.
So quite apart from the sandwiches, novels, copies of private eye, screwdrivers, carry-outs, masking tape, maps, eau de cologne, "safety devices" (use your imagination), stickers, address books, beermats, photos, cds, tapes, wedding presents (!), cameras, binoculars, sleeping bags and other odds and ends that naturally end up in there at one point or another, we're talking smelly socks, toothbrush, passport, airline tickets etc.

If the bag was made out of plastic you'd sometimes think I lived on the streets; during the odd festival that assumption is pretty accurate.

The accordion case carries the box, harmonica and whatever won't fit in the bodhran bag.

Re: What's in the case??

in my fiddle case: fiddle, 2x bows(decent one n the not-so decent one), several sets of strings (new and used-u never know when they may come in useful!), rosin n one of those great pub-prop stands that clips onto a table, which holds my fiddle and bow when im not playing, as well as a list of tunes n assorted music.
i would carry nibbles like molly b, bt our session provides sarnies free of charge- uve just gota pick the fully defrosted ones!

Re: What's in the case??

Fiddle case --- fiddle, bow, green velvet fiddle cover (came with case & matches it), spare strings, rosin, two chamois cloths (one to wipe off rosin, the other to wipe off sweat, fingerprints, etc), tuning fork, shoulderpad, 3 mutes (ranging from heavy and nasty metal one that I only use in hotel rooms and other places one must play QUIETLY, to lovely little wooden one that looks like a roman aqueduct and doesn't work worth a damn but reminds me of the mute I used as a kid), copy of Haand Me Doon Da Fiddle, piece of violet-sprigged seersucker that was my original fiddle cover at age 5 (used to be a doll blanket), piece of yellow and white checked gingham that was a scrap from my first long dress in 1973 and that has a bloodstain on it from an e-string that snapped and embedded itself into the tip of my finger while I was playing.
Harp cases: tuning wrench, spare strings/wire, one tunebook each (Sylvia Woods in the nylon, Robin Huw Bowen in the wire), key signature chart for transposition, harp.
Mountain dulcimer case: mountain dulcimer. (No room for anything else, it's a tight fit and has no pockets!)
Psaltery case: tuning wrench, spare strings, key signature chart for transposition, husband's old Hohner Marine Band harmonica (used to use it for tuning before I discovered the psaltery is dicky to tune and can only be tuned to itself).

Weird lot, aren't we?

Re: What's in the case??

A good thing to have in your instrument case if you're flying anywhere is this letter that you present to the screeners at the airport that will allow you to have your instrument as extra carry-on: http://www.local1000.com/pdf/carryon.pdf

Re: What's in the case??

Jesus, that's a lot of response of a lot of people who carry a lot of crap in their cases. I just emptied mine because it became to full (flyers, foto's, flyers, a bat (not a real one though), keyhangers, keys, deodorant (I still carry that around), and some more stuff I didn't use. I now just carry a box of snuff (always handy for the-day-after), a tuning device with a jack-jack cable, a cloth for the strings, a strap, and the book of Harry Potter that I'm currently reading. Oh yeah, it's all in a banjo case.

Me too, meemtp, o fellow cat-hair carrier.

1. better-quality silver mounted German trade bow 2. intermediate Kirschmann bow (the session one, but quite serviceable) and sometimes 3a an old pernambuco bow that's heavy-ish and a bit strange or 3b Jeff Ellis figured snakewood baroque bow.

Re: What's in the case??

Usually just my fiddle, bow, rosin, a small rag to wipe the fiddle and a kitchen towel to wrap it in, securing it in the case. Oh, and a tuning fork. Sometimes an electrical tuner. And a hip flask of Bushmill's 10 year single malt. Yum!

Re: What's in the case??

Well, last night I put my new toy in my bag along with various flutes & whistles. A camcorder. Got some nice shots of the lads (and lassie)bowing, blowing and plucking away. Pretty good actually. Then Billy took some footage of yours truly on flute then box...cringe, cringe. Playing the box I look like I'm in the dentist's chair straight after coming from a funeral. Looks like someone should have shot me to put me out of my misery. The strange thing is, I was actually enjoying myself, playing Reevy's reel (sp?)!
