Flute Tunes

Flute Tunes

Could someone give me a list of some common session tunes that are good "flute tunes". Many tunes I learn from my session end up being better suited for the fiddle (i.e. - Rakish Paddy, Pigeon on the Gate, Drowsy Maggie). Sometimes I have to mix and match or modify different versions of the same tune until I can play it up to speed in the session. Maybe I should concentrate on more flute tunes since I'm still new to all this. I do have many Irish flute CD's but find that many tunes on the CD's aren't always very common. Any tune suggestions?

Re: Flute Tunes

Go with the tunes with one # (Gmajor, EMinor, ADorian), they seem to fit on the flute well. Here's some common tunes that are often associated with the flute

Jigs, Slips, & Slides
Kesh
Maid at the Spinning Wheel
Blackthorn Stick (AKA Coach Road to Sligo)
Merrily Kissed the Quaker
Morrison's
Cuil Aodha

Reels
Sligo Maid
Galway Rambler
Miss Mcleod's
Tommy Cohen's (AKA X-Mas Eve)
Maids of Mt Kisco (sp?)

Hornpipes
Rights Of Man
Bonapart Crossing the Rhine
Off to California
Etc.
Any polka, there quick & easy to learn (regardless of key) & fun to play.

This should get you started.

Re: Flute Tunes

Brad's got you off to a good start. Some tunes I've found that fit easily on flute include:

Boys of the Lough (reel)
Burning of the Piper's Hut (slow reel)
Road to Lisdoonvarna (jig and reel versions)
The Butterfly (slip jig)
Fig for a Kiss (slip jig)
My Darling Asleep (jig)
Ingonish (jig)
Rambling Pitchfork (jig)

And don't neglect the airs while you're getting used to this music. Inisheer, the Aran Boat Song, Planxty Irwin, etc. make great flute pieces.

Re: Flute Tunes

I could list the tunes i like or the ones i think work great on the flute, but i don't have enough session experience to tell you if they're actually played in sessions or not. Maybe one good place to start is Matt Molloy's "Live at Matt Molloy's" album?

Re: Flute Tunes

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions! So many good tunes, so little time.....I wish I started playing Irish music when I was a lot younger! But better late than never, I guess.....

Re: Flute Tunes

Many of the O'Carolan pieces go great on the flute, my favorites are:
Fanny Power
Sheebeg, Sheemore
Eleanor Plunkett
Squire Wood's Lamentation on the refusal of his Halfpence

The first two are probably better known than the last two, and I'm
not sure how common any of them are in seesions ??

Re: Flute Tunes

You'll hear Carolan's Concerto and I play Carolan's Draught a lot, and "She Begs for More" is a good beginner's tune, but they're not really session standards, at least not round here.

Re: Flute Tunes

That's what i's saying, these tunes work great for the flute. You could add "Farewell to Ireland", "Maid at the Bar", "Morning Dew" (reels), "Joy of My Life/Donnybrook Fair/Humours of Donnybrook" (jig), "Lament for Staker Wallace", "Limerick Lammentation" (slow airs). But are these actually played in sessions? I don't know. My teacher marked up one of my books with tunes she says are useful in sessions, but i don't have the book with me. I'll make a list later.

Re: Flute Tunes

Zina,

She Begs for More ?? . that's a good joke, although I wouldn't beg for more O'Carolan after a couple of tunes.:-)

Re: Flute Tunes for session

My teacher marked up in Mel Bay's Irish Session Tune Book (ISBN 0-7866-2542-2, a cheesy book but not a terrible starting place) a few tunes that are played in actual sessions (at least in the Chicago area). I'm supposed to have them all memorized and ready to go for next Saturday. :-) Here they are:

REELS:
Concertina Reel
The Earl's Chair
Father Kelly's
Foxhunter's
Glass of Beer
Humours of Tulla
Miss Monaghan
Morning Dew
Mountain Road
Rolling in the Rye Grass
Sally Gardens
Ships are Sailing
Silver Spear
Sligo Maid
Star of Munster
Tear the Calico
Toss the Feathers
Traveller

JIGS:
Kesh
Gold Ring
Out on the Ocean

More reels than jigs, no hornpipes, no polkas, nO'Carolan, she said. She's trying to scare the classical flutist out of me.

London Lasses
Duke Of Leinster
Copperplates(2)
Reel of Rio
Down The Broom
Abbey Reel
Jim Donohughe's

and anything by Josie McDermott
