GUINNESS CELEBRATION OF IRISH MUSIC CONCERT
Thursday, 9 September 2004 at 20:00
The highly successful Guinness Celebration of Irish Music Concert is once again set to return to Australia. After an absence of seven years, The State Theatre is pleased to play host to some of the world’s foremost Irish and Celtic artists.
Drawing talent from around the globe, this concert will feature an amazing array of musicians from Ireland, the USA, Scotland, England and Australia. This years line up Includes Cherish The Ladies, Finbar Furey, Arty McGlyn & Nollaig Casey, Chris Newman and Maire Ni Chathasaigh
Re: Concert, State Theatre, Sydney - Cherish the Ladies et al
It's the three hours by plane to Sydney, then the three hours back, and it's on a Thursday - not a weekend. Then Virgin Blue is no longer operating Alice Springs-Sydney-Alice Springs, so the cheap flights are gone.
The Guiness concert might as well be on the moon! But still.
Re: Concert, State Theatre, Sydney - Cherish the Ladies et al
This Guinness concert is also coming to Perth (WA) the following Sunday but I reckon that's not any closer to Alice Springs.
I gather we are getting a group called Bohola as well. Does anyone know anything about them?? It isn't the Fureys - I think it's just Finbar Furey on his own. Is he the piper?
Re: Concert, State Theatre, Sydney - Cherish the Ladies et al
Don't know re the Fureys - the above is copied from the State Theatre web site, but judging from the way it's written (Cherrish the Ladies, and for pete's sake where *has* the State Theatre been for the last seven years?) anything's possible ... I might e-mail them to check, will clarify if I can.

Copied from "Barfly" magazine, Issue 517, Cairns:
"Celebration tour returns. The Guinness Celebration of Irish Music tour is returning to Australia in September for dates in Brisbane (8th), Sydney (9th), Melbourne (11th), Perth (12th) and Adelaide (14th) after an absence of seven years. A concert of Celtic music featuring artists from around the world, the bill includes American group Cherish the Ladies, virtuoso duo Chris Newman & Maire Ni Chathasaigh, guitar whiz Arty McGlynn and Riverdance violinist Nollaig Casey. Another key act on the tour, multi-instrumentalist Finbar Furey and Bohinta (aka Martin Furey and Aine Furey, Finbars son and daughter) will stay in Australia for additional dates, including a concert at the Cairns Civic Theatre (Wednesday Sept 22nd), where Cairns band Snake Gully will be in support. Incidentally, the Guinness craic was instigated on Finbars advice."
This seems to answer your questions, and looks a little more hopeful as far as I am concerned, because there might be something on somewhere that falls into our school holidays.

Wow! I wish I could, but I can't. So close, and yet too far.

You can send me the money that you would have spent on it and I'll pay for my ticket with it, and then tell you all about it afterwards

Enjoy it, all those who can get there. I will have to remain content with LiveIreland or some-such.

You've gotta feel sorry for Alice Springs people - they're a bit... "stranded" aren't they?

Finbar Furey and Bohinta will be performing in The Alice on 18 September. We are not such a backwood afterall.

They came, I went. Sat with some Furey enthusiasts who even knew the words and sang along. Pity Cherish the Ladies didn't make the trip.
