Shared Experiences...

The member number thread made me think about how many people actually exist on this site. It's pretty incredible even if, for whatever reason, people merely lurk, they may be learning tunes and passing them along to other's. I apoligise if this has already been posed but my questions is, how much of what you play in sessions or on your own would you wager you picked up from the knowledgebase that exists on this site? I personally would have to say that at least half of what I play I got/learned from here. Though I may have an opportunity soon, currently I don't have sessions near me nor do I have any players available to work with so this place has helped me make leaps and bounds and perhaps someday I will be able to pass on some of the tunes I've learned.

Re: Shared Experiences...

I think I'm like alot of people and use this site as a bit of a resource for tunes. In other words, I still kind of prefer just learning tunes from recordings, but if I'm stuck on a measure or two, or wanna find what recordings contain a particular tune, I come to this site.

In the non-tune sense, things are a little bit different. I think more than my tune repertoire, the discussions have perhaps shaped my views quite a bit. Granted, I live in a decent area for sessions and can get out quite a bit, I don't necessarily have the opportunities to venture out much beyond my usual sessions, so it's nice to get perspectives from all around the world and fuse them with my beliefs, which then of course (being a talker) get shared at the sessions I attend. Apologies to all the English buffs out there for that run-on sentence.

In short, much of what I play comes from recordings or sessions, but this website is an incredibly helpful resource.

Re: Shared Experiences...

Like Jason, I learn 99% of my tunes from recordings, my mentors, lessons, workshops, concerts, etc. I do find some discussions here interesting. But I think the best thing for me personally is all the really great people I've met through this website. You know who you are ;-)

Hi Jason! Hope all is going well for you in Philly!

Re: Shared Experiences...

I've picked up a couple of tunes from here but I mainly use it for finding sessions as I travel about.

Re: Shared Experiences...

Since I still have trouble learning a tune strictly by ear (but getting better), I find the tunes section an invaluable complement to hearing a tune at a session or on CD that I'd like to learn. Also, I find the comments very helpful as to other settings/variations/etc. and what other tunes go together in sets.

As Jason says above, I find the discussions the most valuable. The chance to share in the collective wisdom of the active participants has enhanced my understanding of various aspects of The Music tremendously, not to mention just being entertained by the back-and-forth banter of this e-session.

The Session would be well worth it at twice the price.

Re: Shared Experiences...

I'd say that I've picked up all the tunes and all the knowledge I have about sessions AT sessions...including this one. :) No, it's not the same as a meatspace session, but neither does a meatspace session come with handy transcriptions of that tune someone just played that I really like, and I've made just as many really good friends here as I have at sessions, in fact, a lot more, because the circle's a lot bigger than you can generally fit into a pub.

I only wish that all the thousands of people who lurk would contribute more, so I could get to know them as well.

Hey Jason! They keeping you hopping out there? The kids went back to school today in our area -- I can tell because the school bus is half a block away.

Re: Shared Experiences...

I use this site to add some life to my days work. When I get fed up I can tap into my real interest, music and as JMH says its the people you meet and who email you from time to time from the site. Its also a great resource for tunes. So keep up the good work Jeremy

Re: Shared Experiences...

I've found this site (as well as John Chambers' ABC tune site) to be tremendously helpful during the past couple of years as I've refocused on learning tunes and sought to improve my reading of sheet music. Now, if I've got a tune in my head, or if I happen to hear one on a CD that catches my fancy, I can more often than not find it here and actually set about to play it while the inspiration is still fresh.

And, yes, I also like the discussions, no matter the signal-to-noise ratio of the subjects! It all serves to enlarge my "community" of musical-minded acquaintances, even if I may never actually meet any of them in person.

Re: Shared Experiences...

University classes start Wednesday. My students don't come until the day after labor day. I'm still enjoying a little honeymoon period, but things will pick up soon enough. Ok, and here's the segue away from this mini off-topic post. I'm planning on hitting a session this weekend, my first one in a while. Ok, continue with session talk.

Re: Shared Experiences...

i havent learned any tunes from the site. i'm sure i will someday, but i have o'neill's and the midwest session tune book (as i'm sure you all do), which have more tunes than i'll know what to do with. but, i havent been coming here long. the 1st place i'll after o'neill's and midwest session tunes is here, tho.

what i find great about the site is the community, and the fact that you CAN share tunes like this, and information, even if you dont need to / want to.

Re: Shared Experiences...

The nice thing about the site is that you can take a look at the same tunes that are in the books to see what other people are doing with them. (I have the Midwest Session book too, daiv.)

Re: Shared Experiences...

I think it's good that you can also see which tunes other people are playing. There's no point learning 100 random tunes from O'Neill's and then go to a session. It's most likely that no one would know any of the tunes you learned. It might be worthwhile to include a kind of a tunebook to the session section of this site, which could list most common tunes in certain session. In the same way as the personal tunebooks work.

Re: Shared Experiences...

Ville, your suggestion came up before, and basically I think it was determined, that if people want to list tunes from their session, they do so on the respective session page. However, for the most part, I think people concluded that doing so is rather cumbersome and probably not worth the effort. There's nothing saying you can't do it though.
