Ed Reavy Tune

Ed Reavy Tune

I'm looking for the Reavy tune that is the first tune on the first track of the Kevin & Seamus Glackin album. If anyone can help me out I'd be soooo happy!

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

Cara, I take it the tune is not named on the album? And what's the title of the recording - I'm not familiar enough with the Glackins to know offhand.

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

It's titled "Reavy's". Northern Lights, I believe it's called. Cara, try going to the website of Scoiltrad -- http://www.scoiltrad.com and listen to the clips of the tunes under the uillleann pipes -- one of the tunes Eoin teaches is a Reavy's. Is that the one?

If it's not, why not just learn it off the album? By ear? You know? :)

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

I don't think this tune is actually one of Ed Reavy's(although it is certainly good enough). It's usually referred to as "Larry Redigan's/Redican's".
It was recorded by Liz Carroll and Tommy Maguire, and I think they called it "The Galway Reel". It is also on either Chieftains 7 or 8 in the set with the "Jug Of Punch" and "My Love Is In America" and Brendan McGinchey recorded it as "Redican's". Sheet music can be found in "Music of Ireland Vol.4" by Dave Bulmer & Neil Sharpley, but there is no name- it is yet another "Ril Gan Ainm".

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

Also recorded by "Shaskeen" as "The Galway Reel".
Sheet music also to be found in "Sully's Irish Music Book:Vol.1"
by banjo-player Tony Sullivan from Manchester in England. He also calls it the "Galway Reel".
Incidentally, none of the 5 sources I've listed for this tune credit it to Ed Reavy.

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

Is that Galway Reel that's also Tam Lin, as in the tune archives, Kenny?

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

Sorry, Zina,
"Tam Lin" as noted in the archive has nothing at all in common with this tune. This "Galway Reel" is in Gmaj.

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

I think you have Galway confused with Glasgow Reel.

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

I just posted "The Galway Reel" as I know it in the tune archives here, hoping it's the one Cara was looking for. I've also heard it referred to as Redican's. Cara, let us know if this was the tune you wanted.

Re: Ed Reavy Tune

thanks a mil for the sheet music! i learn 99.9% of the tunes i have by ear, but for some reason i could not wrap my head around this tune. i've been listening to it for ages on the glackin album but it's too furious for me to get all the notes properly. funny that it's known as the galway reel, cos i lived in galway for 2 years and never heard it there.

cheers
