Sessions, etc in Nova Scotia

Sessions, etc in Nova Scotia

Hello,

I'll be leaving in the next day for Nova Scotia where I'll spend a year abroad studying at St. Francis Xavier University. I am going a full month before school begins so that I can enjoy touring a bit before I have to put my nose to the grindstone. Can anyone recommend any well-known or not so well-known sessions, celildhs or festivals during the month of August?

Thanks in advance!

Erin

Hi Erin, if you go to:

there is a schedule of events for Cape Breton, I'm sure you'll find something to attend there. As for the rest of Nova Scotia, I have no idea.

Here's a site that seems to show a bunch of stuff for the rest of Nova Scotia For August:

The Old or Auld Triangle in Halifax has some awesome sessions starting at 9:00pm. And also, in Cape Breton around Inverness there are so many celdhies you cant count them. If your really lucky, theres a small session at someones house near Cape North on CBI. All they have is a sign out that says Celdhie, small admission. It was awesome.

I would take in Feis an Eilean - on Christmas Island - it would be a great place to make some connections in the Cape Breton Music and Gaelic Culture circles. Other than that, I would go to the dances - especially Thursday Nights in Glencoe, Friday Nights in South West Margareee, Saturday Nights in West Mabou and, I believe, Monday Nights in Brook Village. The Kintyre Farm Concert is excellent http://www.judique.ca/ .

There is some good fun around Antigonish by times. If you are there for traditional music, you should line up some lessons with Stan Chapman while you are there - he is a good head and a great teacher . . . and he has taught the best.

You will have fun at StFX . . . I did!
