I was thinking of acquiring a Lambeg drum (maybe second hand from a LOL) to use at the local session. Any advice on acquiring AND playing it with subtle and steady rhythm?
Joe, what about making your own? You could use two hula-hoops for the framing as it were and use torn apart gold leotards stretched over as the skins. Beat the thing with one of the go-go boots. Call it a Hula Lambeg.
Okay, okay. i get the message. maybe ye don't agree with a lambeg at a session. Tell ye what, so; i have noticed that with the modern advances in radar and navigational aids that the old ship's foghorn has largely fallen into disuse. Anyone know where I could get a cheapish second-hand foghorn? can I come to your session and play it , please?
where I live we are twinned with a town in Brittany and on their visits the musicians regularly play, I think they're called, Bombards, a type of very loud thing, would blow your eardrums. Now Joe you could try that!
Joe, I think Molly would appreciate a comma in your last post, as in: "Have done, Molly." Unless of course she herself is a bombard (I had a girlfriend once who blew my eardrums, but that's another story).
Well I know your joking, Joe, but one of the ex-session people kept upgrading her bodhran, each new one being bigger, deeper and *louder*, and we reckoned it was only a matter of time before a Lambeg drum appeared!

Ye're right o' course, Will. Have done comma Molly. Is that better?
Jim, have you ever seen those yokes they played at the original Riverdance? Like little lambegs.
In keeping with Jim's ever expanding Bodhran, you could always do what a fella in a band from down the road here did... Take a drum kit floor tom, cut the thing in half, tip it on it's side and call it a bodhran. He used a small chunk of firewood to beat it, and he had no trouble making himslef heard over his electric, amplified band.
I watched in a horrified, yet intrigued fascination. I kept thinking "I'd never... well... no, I couldn't...could I?"
Joe, you could also expand your list of "experimental" percussives with an air power mate. You'll want to be very close to the door with that, but it would be cheaper than the foghorn...

Re: Percussion LOL
Jim, Good idea for the name; "Mighty Lambeggers". Attach tin cups for coins. Avoid the potential embarrassment of the dollar bills in to a waistband.
Joe, perhpas not subtle, but the go-go boots have built in rhythm. One out 2 isn't too bad.

Re: Percussion LOL
Joe, the lambeg is not so much a percussion instrument.. more a persecution instrument.

Won't, Zina. Have done Molly. Great sound 'tis like playing the chanter without the rest of the pipes.

Come to think on it, Zina. I do actually change; that's usually after my monthly ablutions (whether I need to or not).

I have recently acquired a 10 foot Chinese gong. Must try it with the tipper.
