I am a bodhran player in a Celtic band in Jackson, Mississippi. There are three Celtic bands in the city, a troupe of Irish dancers and a thriving Celtic music scene here. FORTUNATELY, we have not experienced the problem of rhythm players dominating sessions. We bodhran players usually take turns or play two at a time at most.
My husband, a fiddler, has great respect for the bodhran and the melody players in our band consider me "the heartbeat" of the group. It is equally frustrating for a bodharn player to enjoy and complement a good tune when the melody players rush or ornament excessively.(Just a case in point to let you know it's not an exclusive melody player's problem.) What a joy it is when each member in the session acts as a team player in the best interest of the music.
Oh please. Crusty is sorry he ever started this thread and he was so glad to see it pass to the back page.....only to have it resurrected. Crusty saw that his thread caused some bad feelings and is repentent.
I think all the bodhran players should start a new thread titled "Crusty's Penance" and fill it with nothing but stories of whole corps of bodhran players filling the chairs at sessions, drowning out those pesky melody instruments with their angelic drumming.... *grin*
Harp Seal, I agree that the bodhran can be the hearbeat of the group. It's just kinda odd when one small circle has three hearts all a pitter-pattering. Palpitations, my great aunt used to call it.... But give me one solid drummer, and it almost doesn't matter if no one else shows up (except I miss all their insults).
How come people aren't getting a bollocking for starting the same discussion for a third time??!!
I got one re. McGlinchey tunes.
Come on baloney and jeremy, DO YOUR STUFFFF!!!!!
In our session there are just two persons that play the bodhrán. I, for example, play the concertina and the bodhrán. But I never play it when the other bodhrán player is playing his instrument.
I think that the trick is just, as with every other instrument, not to overwhelm the rest of the instruments.

I have written to the two people who started these discussions when they should have simply added to the existing discussion.
