anchor points

anchor points

what anchor points do players use for various instruments eg guitar, tenor banjo, mandolin, bouzouki? I am a beginner particularly interested in banjo players' methods of anchoring their right hand on the vellum. I believe that Gerry o'Connor only anchors his wrist on the vellum and uses light contacts with nearside of the bridge and strings behind bridge with the bit of his hand below the thumb and side of little finger respectively. Others like Brian McGrath apparently use the little finger on vellum. What technique is advised for a newcomer to the instrument or indeed to any other 'plectrum' instument

Re: anchor points

I like to anchor the side of my hand just behind the bridge this is on mandolin this way you can get away with not touching the instrument for the most part.

Re: anchor points

I can see that you will want to limit contact with the instrument to a minimum for reasons like lack of flexibility (I got that from an ex-member of the sessions) and interference with sound projection but most players do it and as I said I believe that Gerry o connor seems to use 3 anchors albeit lightly. There is a contradiction here and as a beginner I just don't know what way to go. I feel out of control without anchoring but tense with it. I guess that this may be touching on the secrets of the accomplished.

Re: anchor points

I tried anchoring the bodhran player's hand behind his back but it didn't silence him.
