Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

Search in Jeremy's shop for "Relief of Derry" at amazon.co.uk and you can listen to some samples.

I'm not a big fan of orchestral music so wasn't overly keen - it all sounds like film sounds tracks to me.

Do they still sell cassettes ?

Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

Derry was relieved in 1689 after the siege in which the 13 apprentice boys shut the gates of Derry to protect it from King James forces.

Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

I'm not sure I would agree with the term "protect" Billy. I was born in Derry, was brought up in County Derry, currently live in Derry City, my ancestors have lived/ruled here (Cianachta - which covers modern day County Derry) since at least the 11th Century and most people in Derry City wouldn't agree with the phrase 'protect' you used there, but I guess it's all history for good or for bad. It's quite funny and ironic that in such tunes (including the sash) that "Derry" is actually called Derry as opposed to the imposed and much disliked London prefix a lot of bitter people seem to add to Derry. I suppose at least you're not doing that anyhow :) Good to see you're embracing your culture anyhow, I think if people can be united through music, then that could be half the battle won (didn't mean that to sound war like... lol). Anyhow, I'll keep you posted when Derry has been relieved! ;)

Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

Hi Murrough,I like to embrace both sides of my culture,as I don't think that any section of a community should have a monopoly on culture as it is for everyone.Sometimes within my own community I get derided for indulging in what some people see as an irishness which isn't theirs.I believe that we should all experience each others different tastes of culture and be enriched by these experiences.I am also a member of the Apprentice Boys Of Derry, who are one of the most progressive organisations in Northern ireland, and I include nationalist and republican organisations in that,We have entered into dialouge with residents committies whenever it has been required of us.But getting back to your reply I'll see you in Derry in august when we will be relieving it.lol

Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

I'll be there on the walls with the pea shooter (messing)... lol. Yeah fair play to you for getting into the Irish trad stuff too. As I said, if people can embrace the music I think that is a big step forward, as you said "it's for everyone" and I totally agree with this. Scottish and Irish traditional music are so similar anyhow, that people especially from the North of Ireland who choose to ignore their music really are missing out i believe. My Da actaully makes bodhrans from Lambeg drum skins... How much more of a cross-over can you get than that? :P lol

Re: The Relief of Derry, symphony

Watch you don't hit me in August lol.I just came back from Belgium 3 weeks ago (Flanders) where I was at a peace conference,Mary Mcaleese,Alex Maskey,David Ervine et all. Each night in different venues there was trad irish music being played by invited muscians, the only name I can remember was Tracy Mcrory who played the fiddle and a young guy from Shantallow called Ciaran who played the pipes.I had took my whistle and played along with them for a couple of nights, but they seemed astounded that someone from my background could sit and play the Foggy Dew.The people with me were equally confused that I could sit and join in with all these tunes. But at the end of the trip the music had brought everyone together and we all got on with each other fine.It just goes to show that no matter what you are,if there is a common link with a musical culture, then people will get on with each other.

P.S I'll meet you in August and you can buy me a pint!
