I imagine teaching tunes via video over messaging software could work quite work. It would be a lot harder to play together though: there's always a slight delay with video messaging that would make it frustrating.
Still, if anybody else out there is using a Mac with iChat and iSight*, let me know and we could try an exchange of tunes sometime. My AIM name is: adactio.
I think that this is easily done. Does anyone want to try? I do not think it would work playing together, however I could supply an MP3 of the tune being worked on.
The biggest advantage over tapes etc. is that this would allow for dynamic interaction verbally between participants.
Hey, maybe it would be fun for online sessions too!
We use phone conferencing at work and it imposes a certain discipline which makes meeting a lot better, I think. I'd bet that would translate well to lessons / sessions.
Thanks to this site I also started collaborating online with someone I met here and that's going to result in our appearing on stage in August 04 - see http://www.harpbuzz.biz for more details of our concert if you're going to be near the UK midlands around then.
I'm fascinated to know how this idea of online lessons goes, so keep us posted. FWIW I attended a thing on elearning recently, and the tutors there sometimes split up the session - ie they take say an hour's break to allow people to work on stuff before reconvening. They found they lapsed quite well into using the right language, eg "We'll reconvene in an hour" rather than mentioning an actual time-of-day (since of coures you'd have a global audience and absolute times wouldn't mean anything.
I think it would work really well with a group of people of mixed abilities.
Online music lessons
Online music lessons
Has anyone tried giving lessons via Netmeeting/MSN messenger?.
Given that an audio link can be established I think it may be possible for one to one lessons to be conducted.
Anyone interested in an online tin whistle or uilleann pipe lesson, send me an email.
This could be very useful for those living in remote areas or where there are very few musicians.

If you follow this through, Beardy, let me know how you get on. I've been wondering about this, too.
