as the last few notes of the tune were played, there was a little,a very little vibrato. It happened, and felt quite natural, only I can't remember what I did.Does anyone else remember achieving something like this for the first time, and if so, how long does it take to become deliberate and controllable?
yours worzel.
aw, sounds like a sweet and wonderful moment for you. This is the stuff of musical journeying. Uness you play a viola. BTW Zina there is a fellow named Dave on this site who plays a viloa, but icant match him up with the member profiles. you know him?
thanks, the viola is great, and one of the reasons that I started on the fiddle. As a real beginner on both, not a great deal of anything apart from right notes in the right order on the viola. We have just started a small local orchestra, first gig on 19th June.
It's good being a viola in the orchestra, except for the (very bad ) viola jokes.
yours worzel
I don't hink violas are offensive at all - they have a lovely, mellow, sonorous tone.
Don't they get bad press 'cos of the fact that the parts written for them in classical music are often (but not always) a leetle beet boring? Aww the poor old violas!
we, that is the four violists, are getting t-shirts printed, with,"Violas, the brains of the orchestra."
we also do not understand the opprobrium induced by our instruments, although some of us play rather less than well.
Do we count as a minority interest group, are we being discriminated against?
it's good to be one anyway.yours worzel
as another viola player I would agree, we are being discriminated against.
I think it's because almost every classical violinist I've met seems to think they too can play the viola. Most of them can't, but because they think that they can play viola and that violists can't play violin, then they are obviously only there to make jokes about. or something like that.
Maybe it's because they're the ONLY instrument in the World (well I've never heard of any others) that uses alto clef, so the look on their faces when they have to play anything that wasn't meant for viola....
When Frankie Gavin used a viola on one of his early, tracks, it just sounded like a fiddle recording slowed down...and he's good player...
Makes you think.
Back on topic, years back I just finished playing a tune on fiddle (can't remember which one). I was so pleased to get it right, I finished the last note with a heavy bow and a heavy left-hand finger press....and that was the start of vibrato.
Worzel, had the same experience last week. (Cue Theramin...) Had just re-read Will's excellent advice on the elusive vibrato, and it worked for that day. Next day nothing. Sort of back Saturday. Works best when not thinking about it.

re the viola thing,-i've said all i have to on that in past threads, suffice to say that one smart-arse member here attempted to tell a so-called viola joke and got it totally arseways about in his first try - i rest my case.
viola players are a far superior species to orchestral violinists in every possible way.and they can drink more too.remember, what is good on viola is always good on the violin but not all that is good for vln works on the viola-we use our ginormous brains to GREAT effect.haha,hoho,hehe-in the words of the immortal stan & ollie.
anybody wishing to take issue with that, sports hall roof,4pm.i'll sort you out.
i could rant further, trust me,but i shall desist from my homer simpson moment...

Re: dunnit
How long? In my case, only a little bit longer than a lifetime.

Re: dunnit
I played classical viola, my biggest problem with vibrato was NOT doing it.
I know that doesn't help you much.

Re: dunnit
I've never understood the origin of the viola joke thing. Bodhrans, banjos and accordians OK, but how can violas be offensive?
