Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

Hi everyone! I'm a new member who has rapidly become addicted to this fascinating site. Recently I've been looking for an Irish- tuned button box. I'd love to hear from all players. How did you decide on yours? - brand, tuning, sound quality, action, wet or dry, availability, new or old, ? etc. I'd really appreciate any help you can give in this BIG decision. I've been using a D/A ,second- hand Hohner and would like to move on to a C#/D.

Re: Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

hi,

try to determine the sound you like, dry as Sharon Shannon and a lot of trendy young players, or wet likesome years ago..the sound of the Paolo Soprani..
I took me long time and a lot of search on the web to understand the reasons for the differences in sounds..and finally to make my choice..
i've just received a new box..Exactly the sound i was looking for.

It's a Saltarelle Shamrock 4 voices, tuned with a very wet sound (musette). The 3 middle voices are tuned: 445, 435 and 440, so there is a lot of vibrato...

Re: Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

I have to agree with ljw.You can't beat the Paolo Soprani especially the grey ones.I heard that B.Leonard before but hes not up to the standard of Luke Ward!! You want to here him on the auld squezze box,NO BETTER MAN!
You want here him play seany dorris,it would make you cry.
Theres a fella I know called V.tighe, hes your man.He plays a nice pink paolo.I've never heard anyone like him.Chromatic runs, triplet chords, ofbeats on the onbeat.Hes some boy.Lovely hurling on the box!!!

Re: Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

Yeah, but arent' the old Paolos pretty expensive?

In terms of new boxes, there seems to be a hint toward Castagnari for the somewhat dark tone, and Saltarelle for the crystal clear notes. But it depends on the tuning. Remebmer, a accordion can be tuned to the sound you prefer by a skilled craftsman.

But yeah, the old sopranis are way cool! Try listening to Anders Trabjerg...

"Chromatic runs, triplet chords, ofbeats on the onbeat..."

Hey Dminor, can you explain what you mean by off-beats on the on-beat? And by triplet chords, while you're at it.

Re: Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

Thank you for your input everyone. It all helps to narrow things down a bit . I know I prefer a bit of wetness but not musette sound for Irish music. I don't like brightness much in any instrument. I guess cost will be a factor, too,in the long run. I'll keep listening and searching around on the net until I'm more sure.in the meantime.

Re: Button boxes: How did you choose yours?

I got a Zip-Accordion because buttons were too fiddly late at night.
