how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Mondays is music lesson day for 2 of us,which means nagging about practice over the weekend, which is unpopular.
I found an old copy of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, and started reading it outloud.
The boys are hooked, even the 5 year old, who doesn't understand most of it but enjoyed the vogon poetry!
Has anyone else rediscovered this, I haven't read it for at least 20 years.
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Almost 4 years ago we used to have this total whacko here in the factory who called himself "Ford" after the lead character of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. His only redeeming quality was that he liked Irish and Scottish music. Sometimes he blasted highland bagpipe music from his boom box and that would piss everyone off on the factory floor.( I thought it was funny)...... So I decided to read the damn book just out of morbid curiosity. Hey it was good! Normally Sci Fi books aren't my cup of tea, but this one was kinda cute : )
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
"Oh freddled gruntbuggly, Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblothchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes....""
Still, I've heard almost as bad at "Poems and Pints" nights in some folk clubs.
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Of Slartibartfast: "He had planned to spend his retirement learning to play the octaventral heebiephone; a pleasantly futile task, as he had the wrong number of mouths"
Still more likely to succeed than with a crap set of Burleigh pipes like I had.
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
I've always wanted to name a cat "Wowbagger the Indefinitely Prolonged". Except that with that name, the cat would have a major attitude, and cats have that problem anyway.
I think you ought to know I'm feeling horribly depressed.

Joe, good idea. Had myself a nice dose of Ffidl Ffadl and am now feeling much better. ;) Bother the cat, anyway. In fact, wallop the cat! (Oh, wait, don't have that cd with me. Drat.)

Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Great to see so many be-"hitched" sessioneers.
I first came into the universe and everything trying to solve the computer text adventure game in 1985. I found that reading the trilogy in fact helped me getting around in the Galaxy.
At my last trip to Ireland I came across the original radio play and I bought a set of CDs. So now I am the fortunate owner of CD1 and CD2 of the radio play. Someone had snitched #2! Anyone who can help me out on this one ? MP3s would do fine..
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
I remember seeing a re-run of the tv show of Hitch Hiker in the late 80's and we were all shocked when one of the characters goes to the buy and pays for 5 pints with a fiver - some of it has aged indeed.
Come on Aidan, I'm pretty sure you were holding a copy of the Hitch Hiker's guide to the galaxy a few months back. What was it like after all this time?
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
I have to admit I've never grown out of the Guide. Many of the silly notions DNA came out with ...sorry, that's Douglas Nigel Adams...have pervaded my brainwave energy. I was a student around that time, so some of that time was spent toking dodgy Red Leb or Home Grown. My fave bit was the Babel Fish and how it *proved* the non-existence of God....
Oh, and the one about Biros, because as they always disappeared when you needed one some geezer came up with the theory where they slipped through a wormhole in the fabric of the space-time and made their way to a planet inhabited solely by Biroid life forms - and he claimed to have spent 6 months there driving a limousine for a family of cheap green retactables...
Classic stuff...anyway what's this got to do with the music? Nothing, but I was mad into Planxty, The Bothy Band De Dannan then as well...
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Apparently Douglas Adams rewrote whole tracts of THG when it went from edition to edition or from radio to book to TV. So plot details vary according to precisely what you are reading, hearing or seeing at the time. Nothing was carved in stone as far as that remarkable man was concerned.
Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
I was in Scotland whe I heard the BBC do hitch hikers on the radio (1978 or so). i ws in stitches, laughing so hard. I found the English editon (as opposed to the USA version) in a book store there. I think my eldest took that copy as well.
I gave all my 3 kids hard cover covers of the trillogy for birthdays and Christmas as well.

Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
There's a big budget HHGTG movie currently filming, scripted by Mr Adams himself (well, up until the bit where he died).
Inspired casting, including the guy who played Tim in Ricky Gervai's 'The Office' as Arthur.
And John Malkovich.

Re: how to relax after "helping" the children with music pracice
Fifteen or twenty years ago the BBC did a radio production of The Hitch Hiker's Guide. It was even better than reading the book.

Yehbut...that's because the book(s) were written *after* the radio series. And the Radio 4 series first came out in 1979.
