So how was your Fleadh?

So how was your Fleadh?

Lots of Fleadh activity around this time of year. Last week-end Leitrim and Carlow. I was at Leitrim. How did Carlow go. We were blessed in Drumsna, a beautiful village outside Carrick on Shannon with brilliant sunshine for the Fleadh. The place was crammed with people, young and old and musicians from all over. The atmosphere was brilliant, what a Fleadh should be (read and learn Roscommon). There are only 4 pubs in Drumsna, one of what was shut due to a family funeral. Myself and friends honoured Duignans pub with our presence for the week-end and what a genial host Mr. Duignan proved to be with drink and sandwiches to beat the band. Our session was very fluid with a steady core and plenty of visitors coming and going all day and night. The other pubs also had really good sessions and Sean and Ward and Jim Connolly played in the lovely sunshine. It suited Jim as he likes to smoke.

There was only one fly in the ointment. Around 10 pm on Sunday night our session was drowned out by loud thumping disco music from outside. On investigation it proved to be a local discoman with all his speakers etc., bent on entertaining the street crowd. WE protested loudly to him and the committee and got him shut down. Honestly, disco at the fleadh. It could only happen in Ireland!

Met and made lots of new friends this week-end and so the party moves on. How did Carlow go and any other fleadh stories around.

Re: So how was your Fleadh?

One night at FKW, Emily and I were going to try and go to a disco just for a laugh. There was a big disco at the Seaview hotel (where we were staying) and we walked through it a couple times on our way in and out of the hotel. But there just wasn't enough time for everything!

My young piper buddy was in Ireland last fall for about 5 weeks. Naturally he visited many sessions, but he also enjoyed the discos too : )

Re: So how was your Fleadh?

Hi Joyce, yes but a disco in the middle of a village street where musicians are playing on the street and which is so loud that you cannot hear yourself playing in the pub. This is a guy who has a kind of travelling set up which he sets up on the street and gets paid . Maybe I'm being picky but everyone of the musicians at the Fleadh, and remember a local fleadh in Ireland is a small affair complained about the disruption and we actually had to stop playing inside in the pub because of the noise outside and, by the way, there was no one even listening or dancing to the disco outside!! BTW Joyce what parts of ireland are you planning on hitting this summer?

Re: So how was your Fleadh?

Hi Deirdre, a disco in the middle of a fleadh does sound terrible. I'll send you an email about Ireland since things are so totally up in the air with my life right now. I'm pretty sure about Return to Camden Town in October. But everthing else is just a maybe....
