i only want to express my gratitude for this website.........i was just now reading about "tension in the laft Hand" and Will harmon from Montana's careful response to the person who posted the discussion, and it occured to me how good and fine this Session Board is, that we can read and write and talk aboutthe things we love so much, to people all over the world..... It is a stunning wonderful thing this internet.. except goddammit I could be learning new tunes in the same time i now spend at the computer!).
LOL! You're so right Vboyd, this place is like paradise, except there's less fruit and more clothes.
But now I'm thinking Jeremy should have an extra button in the Navbar called Will Harmon's Carefully Answered Questions, sensibly indexed and cross-referenced to enhance your session experience.
Say, that's not 'arf an interesting idea... I wonder if there's any merit to collating thesession.org guru-ness into book form?
If you are puzzled by our references to "Tanya" on your last posting "she" was active on the site a year ago with VERY extreme (she'd make Montana survivalists look like a bunch of wet liberals) views on Bluegrass and other non "pure drop" aspects of the tradition. A lot of people were upset by her and did not realise it was a bit of a wind-up. Any comment or posting that now approaches the edges of these topics (country, old-timey etc.) will probably generate an affectionate "Tanya" reference. She is greatly missed.
Yes, I miss Tanya too. In fact I think I miss her the most. We had several private emails going back and forth. I was getting worried because I was starting to fancy her too!!! Well it was to my great relief to find out that she was really a *he*!
So Tanya, please come back. Send me an email. I don't care who you are.
Oh, I don't miss Tanya at all. I'd frankly rather have gotten to know the person who inflicted her upon us rather than a made up persona that someone else thought would be funny. Though I figured she was a windup, I took it seriously, because you never know -- what if she had been? You can't go supposing that everyone being ridiculous is a windup, because imagine if they're not, at that point -- everyone has different definitions of "ridiculous". It's a basic Netiquette rule, and there are excellent reasons for it. I thought it was dreadfully rude of the person who did it and it put Jeremy to an awful lot of work that he shouldn't have had to do, especially since it started off a spate of copycats. A shame.
Well, she wasn't really from Montana......her IP address was coming from Oz. And her lingo and certain key words she used in her emails gave her away. I know she was a headache for some folks, and probably did offend some people, but I don't think she meant any true harm.
But hey, even though I figured she was a wind-up, I still corresponded with her via email, hoping I might be wrong.....
Nobody ever means true harm, Joyce -- "I didn't realize the door of the plane would blow off if I pulled on that lever!" *grin* Personally, I think it's possible there was more than one "Tanya" -- which means a conspiracy of sweetness and light.
When "she" rose from the dead, on different occasions, I was doubtful if it was the original and genuine article. You could tell by the style of writing and "she" even appeared to have mellowed. However, I think the "Tanya" who contibuted most of last summer was just one person. Who though, I don't know.
Oh, the first time she appeared, she was fine if a bit ingenuous. She gradually got more and more obnoxious (and more and more drop dead gorgeous somehow! LOL) as time went on and the writing style changed, so I'd imagine that the shifting IP address had something to do with that...this is all idle rumination, of course, Jeremy probably knows quite well who it/they was/were.
Hijacked at the third posting! is this a record? Geoff's so fond of the subject of Tanya, he's the only person I *don't* suspect of being one of her alter egos. ;o) Are you heading up North anytime soon, Geoff? The midges will be stirring before too very long ......
BTW, Q, the answer is yes -- we've been after Will for quite some time to put stuff down, and he's working on two different books on session life/fiddling side by side. You ARE still working on those, aren't you, Will?
Distractions, distractions. See, there was this weekend-long session down in Wyoming, and now a slew of new tunes to learn, and we've got company this week, oh, and in my "real" job I'm in the throes of proofreading the galleys for yet another book (on natural resource policies) I co-authored, and so it goes.
Honestly, all I ever try to do in here is offer my own modest tuppence. Having suffered through going-on 25 years of listening to myself attempt to play fiddle, I've run head on into just about every difficulty there is and they all seem to stay fresh in my mind, probably because I play nearly every day I'm just glad that anyone else finds my commisserations helpful. And I am daily grateful to Jeremy for hosting this site--it's benefits to the little community of Irish trad musicians are immeasurable.
It _has_ occurred to me that nothing should stop me from trying to earn a living as a mediocre Irish fiddler, since I live my own example, earning a very satisfactory living as a very mediocre writer.....
But look at that 'left-hand tension' thread--lots of other people contributed a bunch of good ideas and advice. Precisely what's so wonderful about this site. We're all in this together, passing along what others passed on to us, eh?
No, you said you were--and I quote--"just plain awful."
*the Harmon look* :- |
Careful, or I'll send everyone over to that other site to read your award-winning reviews....
Persiflage? This truly is an awesome website, that I visit daily (ok, more than that), but I have yet to find a dictionary here. Please don't make me leave just to look up esoteric words.
Lets set the record straight...unwrap that cigar...
I did not have email relations with that woman. (Tanya)
I never told anybody to lie, not a single time, never.
These allegations are false and I need to get back to tuning my fiddle.
So S/He is/was from Oz huh?
I do apologise on behalf of my fellow antipodeans.
But it ain't me babe...
oh you people are so funny! talk yalk and talk.........but what about the time thing? it takes time to log on, and read a few responses, and write something..........dont you find that music pretty much wipes out your "free" time"? I want to talk, and get to know you all, and you me.but how? Theres only 24 hours in a day!
Who is Jeremy? Is he a person who reads the whole site every day? Does he get paid? where does he live? is it a fulltime job? Who pays him?
finally, YES YES to Vancouver, but, better still, Vancouver Island, where I live,, paradise, with clothes cuz it gets a bit windy and chilly.....We are out in the Pacific and it seems like all the Escape artists live here, musicians writers dropouts, peaceniks, environmentally sensitive individuals, respecters of the past, independantly wealthy individuals, retirees, pot growers (number one cash crop in BC)......anyway, TONS of music here. lots and lots and lots.....
ps i looked up the profiles of everyone who posted here, and nive to get to know you,,,,,,hi and hello and wow! what a community.....
You are lucky to live there. I hitched across Vancouver Island in 1978 and camped on the beach somewhere on the west coast with an old girlfriend (well she wasn't old then.... and still isn't....think I got away with that one).
I caught a salmon and played fiddle tunes on the beach. It's a beautiful place (unless you're a salmon).
Sorry your thread got completey hijacked but it's always good to reminisce about Tanya.
ha ha.. yes, it seems the thread should be re named...maybe someone could start a thread that is directly titled tanya tanya wherefore art thou tanya......
anyway, this is really fun but i am going to have to(after today and tomorrow for another peek, and the next day) limit myself to once a week visits... the time thing...
You probably camped on Long beach, near Tofino or Uclulet,, it seems to collect west bound travellers because its as far as you can go...
i have been to london once, en route to ire]land 1975. and i went west as far as i could, to Cape clear youth hostel on an island off Baltimore (skibbereen) in Co cork.......
Hi vboyd -- welcome to The Session, btw! If you can't be playing, The Session is the next best thing. ;) I'm afraid that we do talk rather incessantly. Coming on once a week will probably keep you from being sucked down into the morass, though. Heh.
Jeremy is our Benevolent Dictator (a name we gave him, not one he assumed for himself) -- he designed, runs, maintains, and moderates (when needed) this site, which started out as an e-mail list, first, and then as a site where Jeremy would post a tune every week, and then finally in it's present form, more or less. He does this out of his own pocket for the love of it, and it's a good thing too, or we'd probably have caused him to chuck it all into the air in frustration long since. You can always tell when he's gone on vacation; the tunes submitted to the archive go un-sheet music-ed until he gets back.
Personally, I've suspected Geoff Politt of being Tanya more than once. *grin* He's still a nice man, though. *smirk*
just plain thanks

Bring back Tanya! She was such a sweetie; sensual pout, full of the joys of Spring, modest nature and a wry sense of humour.
Let's have a petition.
