I'm wondering if anyone knows of any existing artists who have recorded music for just celtic guitar (acoustic or electric)? I've got lots of stuff with small groups or solo instruments such as fiddle, but I can't seem to find any recording that has focused on guitar renditions of trad tunes. I would be so grateful for any suggestions or leads. Thanks!!
Richard Thompson (and hence Fairport Convention) - if you look for Thommo's solo albums there's a fair bit of acoustic trad scattered about. With Fairport it all gets electrified.
Richard Thompson's "Strict Tempo" is a great all-instrumental CD where he tackles many traditional Scottish and Irish tunes (and one Duke Ellington) on acoustic, electric and steel guitar.
Very varied approaches to each track, it's great listening even if you're not a guitarist.
Try his "Scott Skinner Medley" - with Fender Strat, bass and drums, absolute cracking stuff.
It's hard to find on CD but not out of print I believe - well worth searching out. One of my all-time favourites.
This is the Stefan Grossman Guitar Workshop site. He has many guitar styles on video, many Celtic. He is a great guitar player himself, and known more for blues and ragtime, but can play some pretty mean Irish tunes too. He is a nice guy and very helpful, email with any questions you may have, and he occassionaly will hold a workshop with Celtic guitarists at his house in NJ.
Robin Bullock also has some interesting stuff. He tends to fuse some different styles, but of his recordings ("Lightning Fields", "Midnight Howl", "Green Fields", "Between the Earth and Sky"), there is quite a bit of Irish on them. Check the recordings section of this site. I think most of them are posted, and if not, I might have to post some of them. Anywho, worth checking out.
Dave MacIssac...Tony MacMannus. Some of Dave's recordings also feature his fiddle playing. His first recording was all acoustic guitar. Later ones include electric, fiddle, dobro...backed by a full electric band...very varied! Great player.

Arty McGlynn:
His first one used to be called "McGlynn's Fancy", but they renamed it "Celtic Airs" to sell to the new age audience, but it's still great .
Then there's his albums with his wife, Nollaig Casey: Lead the Knave, and Causeway - some great guitar work on these.
Less visible (audible) but still great is his work on the earlier Patrick Street albums.
Here's a sound sample of Arty's playing:
