Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
Guitar - yes, that's true! When I meet other people, everybody looks suspicious and disrespectful, and when I start talking, nobody listens to me - maybe because, regardless of topic, I bang on the same set of sentences...
Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
Speaking of feeling particularly plucky, Darin--I suppose I am feeling even pluckier than you since my smaller harp has 26 strings, and the larger has 32.
But then what of the devil's instrument? Am I angel (harp) or devil (fiddle)?
Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
I do play a little bit of concertina (for morris dancing, rather than ITM). Guess it can be pretty easy to press my buttons. (Sorry, pre-empting the accordionists here)
And although I play mandolin, I don't think of myself as particularly high-strung.
Being a father of two, I suppose it's only appropriate I play guitar mainly in DAD-gad.
Is my wife standing nearby? OK, I'll mention that _she_ plays the Appalachian dulcimer -- you know, just drones on and on and on. (I suppose the pipers could've used that one...)
Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
My theory is that you are born with a hidden preference for a certain instrument which one day finds you - not the other way round.
I've seen it happen with a bass-guitar player - usually they are tall, show a stupid grin and badly coordinated movements.
"Hey, you're a bass player, you just didn't know about it yet!"
Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
What about multi instrumentalists? I try to play mandolin, fiddle, guitar, tenor banjo, octave mandola, a bit of key boards, melodica, sing the odd song, play the gramophone/CD player etc. Only the latter, can I do very well. :>))
You're right. That does make me a *very mixed up* sort of character.
Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
Taking on characteristics might be slightly out, being in tune (no pun intended) with your instrument might be more to the point. I would agree with Kuec about finding the instrument that suits you, I had to wait until I was 42 before I found mine but I've got it at last. And it's true, acoustic bass players are tall, but some are skinny, some are chubby, but they're all tall.
do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
just like people look like their pets etc., do some people take on characteristics of their instrument? Is their choice predetermined unconsciously?
I play the GHB (highland pipes) and like them I am loud, warm and natural sounding. (opinions will differ)
But what about you and please be as witty as you see fit, life is way to short to take it too seriously.

Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
I play the fiddle, does that mean I like to be stroked & fingered? Well unless I'm playing the flute that's when I like to be held & blown.
Sorry I just had to put some levity in this before it turned into a bashing session.

Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
LOL Brad, those are impossible to top!
So now that I'm learning flute and whistle and 4-string banjo after years of playing fiddle, does that mean I'm developing multiple personalities?
Then again, I've been told--more than once--that I 'don't look like a fiddler.' What? I've never figured out just what that means.
So if you play Cage's 4' 33" are you invisible?
And my brother plays a church pipe organ, but last time I checked, he still didn't look anything like the insides of your average gothic cathedral....

If you play the organ, do you like getting pumped?

Re: do some people take on characteristics of their instrument?
I used to play the pipes - but I began to be a droning windbag.
Now I play the flute, and like to dribble on the thigh of the person nearest to me.

Well, I play my various instruments depending on the mood I am in , so the instrument unintentionally reflects me.
