Due to the lack of sessions in the area, my family band is thinking of playing coffee houses to get some experience playing in public. I'm not especially gifted when coming up with band names. In the process of trying to come up with one for our band, I suggested "Craic Addicts" to my dad. That didn't go over too well, especially because I had to explain the meaning of "craic" to him. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that if we use the name of your suggestion, it might be exposed to surfers.
There's a great tradition of naming bands after jigs or reels or other tunes -- The Rakes of Kildare, Scatter the Mud, Cherish the Ladies, Planxty, Boys of the Lough ....
How about..
-- Banish Misfortune
-- The Blarney Pilgrims
-- Chief O'Neill's Favourite
-- The Doon (I like this one!)
-- Drowsey Maggie
If you're going to go for a tune name, avoid the obvious ones. Then you'll stick in people's minds. Try:
The Floating Crowbars
The Cows that Ate the blanket (great if you're an all girl band)
McFadden's Handsome Daughters (ditto)
Wandering Willy (maybe not - don't go there!)
The Kinnegad Slashers
The Mayo Snaps
I Will If I Can
The Angry Peelers
Walk Out Of It, Hogan
hey Emmaline, my name's Seán. I'm an 18 year old fiddler from Long Beach in Southern California and I know of quite a few sessions that you could go to. I don't know if you drive and I don't know where you live, so I don't know if it will be easy for you to reach them:
>The Harp Inn, every 2nd Sun. of month @4pm, www.harpinn.com
>Finn McCool's, every Sun. @4pm, www.gerrigilliland.com/finn/
>Celt Arts Cent. every Mon. @9pm,www.celticartscenter.com/Main.htm
hey this is Seán again, I just wanted to know if you would like to get together and play sometime. If so, shoot me an email. Hope to hear from you soon!
What makes you say that, Bowhand? Certainly not the post I made above yours?! Thanks, though. Glad to know that my presence on this site is not un-wanted.

Re: Craic Addicts
How about the Ceili Family?
It's a p***-take of the Irish-american Kelly Family who were very successful in the pop business over here.

Re: Craic Addicts
"Craic YerFaceAndMakeYerArseJealous !"
From "The High Life", 1999. (just for fellow Glaswegian Danny!)
What about FCEK (the Irish Connection?), or "Squinty McGinty", or the "Velvet Valentines" ?

Re: Craic Addicts
I think "The Angry Peelers" might be a bit too scary for the North American male audience.
