Naming conventions in tunes and recordings : The Tune or Not The Tune

Naming conventions in tunes and recordings : The Tune or Not The Tune

As the tune archive grows, I find that the linking of tunes from recordings to the tune archive gets increasingly valuable to use. Yet another added-value that *The Session* has to offer!

However, I have noted that quite many non-highligted tunes are indeed available in the base, and often what prevents automatic links to be created is such simple things as the presence (or lack of ~) the word "The" (i.e. a mismatch in the tune name and the recording..

Now this may me "repaired" by entering a second name for the tune identical to the one present in the recording, but this does not seem to be a long-term solution to the problem.

May I suggest that either a naming convention is established or that some means for automated or manual "gardening" /washing is established?

Re: Naming conventions in tunes and recordings : The Tune or Not The Tune

A weeding of sorts, yes. The problem is, most of us get a certain name stuck in our heads because its the one used week in week out, drunk or sober, and anything even slightly different is cause for confusion and stuttering. So I posted, "When Sick is it Tea THAT you Want?" whereas a more common title is probably When Sick is it Tea You Want? All I know is the "That" was included in the title on Johnny B. Connolly's "Bridgetown" cd, as far as I know. so there it is.

I suggest that we call the tune whatever's most familiar to us as the person posting it. But then add the tune by another name, particularly if that's what it's called on one or more cds in the recordings archive. Or alternatively, list the most prevalent name as it's listed on cds, and provide your counter culture names in the "other" list.

Personally, I enjoy the look of consternation when someone asks, "What's that one called?" and I reply, "Tam Lin, or Howling Wind, or The Glasgow Reel." And they think you've named every tune in the set.....

Re: Naming conventions in tunes and recordings : The Tune or Not The Tune

I've been doing some weeding on the tune titles. I've added "The" at the start of tune titles, where it's appropriate. I then went through the recordings and did the same thing.

From now on, I'll just do a quick little check whenever a new tune or recording is submitted.

For the record, when in doubt, add "The" to the start of tune titles, e.g. "The humours of somewhere" rather than "Humours of somewhere", "The something in the other thing", etc.

Of course, something like "Cooley's" stays "Cooley's", not "The Cooley's".

I think it'll be fairly clear on a tune by tune basis.
