Titanic Set Session Tunes

Titanic Set Session Tunes

Hi all -- I was wondering if anyone knows the names of the tunes played by
Gaelic storm in the movie titanic, particularly the scene "Irish Party in third class."
Many thanks in advance. -john

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

I'm one of those fortune few who hasn't sat through Titanic yet, but I do know that one of the tunes in the Irish party set is the jig, The Blarney Pilgrim.

Our session in Helena has often joked about doing a "movie set," tunes from soundtracks. Blarney Pilgrim from Titanic, The Gael (written by Dougie MacLean) from Last of the Mohicans, Lark in the Morning from The Devil's Own, and Music for a Found Harmonium from Malcom. I'm sure there are more?

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

Will I don't remember any of those tunes, but I didn't watch that movie for it's ITM content. I do remember a really drunk & sloppy rendition of Drowsey Maggie & a really common polka that I don't know the name of but am posting to the Tunes section. I'm sure somebody know the name of it. (I usually call it "Put down the beer & put the fiddle away" because that 's what folks say when I play it.)

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

Hi there! Brad. In the band we always try to get rid of that polka, but we simply just can't help playing it at the end of the gig cause people really love it! Maybe it's not the right name. We call it "John Ryan's"

Will, great idea about "the movie set". Serious now, haven't you listened the soundtrack of "McMullen Brothers? by Seamus Egan? if not, you can't miss it!!

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

And what about that uilleann pipe that pops up in the middle of Braveheart (while there's a highland piper on the screen!)?

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

Yes, it's called John Ryan's. I haven't seen the movie either, but when our band play it we do it with Dennis Murphy's polka and call it the Titanic set. So maybe both of them occur in the movie

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

Hi everyone,
My friend made sorta me watch Titanic agian, and the tunes that I recognized were Rakish Paddy, and Gealic Storm plays Blarney Pilgrim/ John Ryans, Drowsy Maggie and the Kesh jig.

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

I only saw the film once and was really struggling to name the tunes. John Ryans Polka and the Blarney Pilgrim are definites. I knew I played Drowsy Maggie and one of my favourites The Kesh, so thanks for putting my mind at ease on these. I play the Blarney Pilgrim with Merrily kiss the Quakers Wife. They go well together.

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

I think the first reel they played on the movie was called "The Haunted house", but i'm not sure, the blarney pilgrim and this one are quite similar, and i can't remember it exactly.

Re: Titanic Set Session Tunes

Before the "third class session" (when they play John Ryan's Polka and The Blarney Pilgrim) they play another set while Jack's playing poker. You can hear another set played by a band (don't know the name) with Eileen Ivers. The tunes are:

Humours Of Caledon
The Red-Haired Lass
The Boys On The Hilltop
The Bucks Of Oranmore

Cheers!
