sessions in Devon

I've recently moved down to Devon and I need people to play with ! Come on, I know you're out there, and the nice people at Quigleys are so welcoming on a Sunday afternoon but I feel stupid sat there on my own. So come and join me and get things going again?

Re: sessions in Devon

The only session in Devon that is listed here is apparently discontinued.

Re: sessions in Devon

May I suggest you have a look at the folk dance and music societies in Devon - there's one at Willand that I know of. You may have to go outside the Irish trad field of course, but if a folk dance music workshop I attended in Willand is anything to go by there's a lot of good playing around.
I'm sending you a contact name and address by email to help you in your searching.

Re: sessions in Devon

Hi all,
unfortunately this thread turned up too late for this journey (I have been looking for it before we went but could not find it, now that I received the monthly letter there ist was....), but we will be going there again, so thanks for all your help. I have been to the only mentioned pub that hosted a session in Bideford (Quigleys) and they confirmed that it is not running at the moment though they still advertise trad session on the sunday afternoon.
Trevor, I did not receive any email from you but would be very happy to get the contact.

Re: sessions in Devon

You could always arm yourself with a passport and come over the border to Dorset!!

Re: sessions in Devon

And Somerset and Bristol are just up the M5 (no passports necessary - we accept everybody!)

Re: sessions in Devon

Hi Guys and especially Trevor,
thanks for the mail, I will keep it and ring her up the next time we come ! As for Somerset, Bristol and Dorset : Most times we come over for just 5-7 days to visit the In-Laws and as we fly in to London and treat ourselves to the drive to Barnstaple....well we donīt feel very much like driving half the way back just 2 days later :-)))
Trevor, you have not heard me playing the flute so be careful to say you accept everybody...you might change this policy after knowing me !!!
Sarah, maybe one day we will meet and talk a bit flutestuff...Iīd love to meet another woodenflute-player as in our session there are only silverflutes which is a different cup of tea (although they donīt think so...)

Re: sessions in Devon

If you can time one of your visits for the 1st week of August there are usually a lot of sessions going on in Sidmouth associated with the festival. I usually go there on the first Sunday and start an informal session sitting on the seafront!!

Re: sessions in Devon

I may be wrong but I think there is a session in Totnes on a Sunday or Monday. Not been but I may do as I get down there from time to time visiting the aged parents and looking up old pals from my dim and distant past...... it was a long time ago.....when I was young..... I remember.....
No this is getting silly!

Re: sessions in Devon

thanks everyone, I don't get on the computer much at the moment so I'm a bit slow getting back to it. There's a bit of confusion with drdagmar over who started the thread!
Having been brought up in Somerset/Bristol area I often pop back that way so I may have to meet up with Trevor some time.
As for the Dorset musicians, you wouldn't happen to know if a flute player by the name of Derek is back on the scene, probably Portland if anywhere.
Meanwhile, I'll be popping down to Bodmin and Tintagel this weekend for research purposes.

Re: sessions in Devon

Hi Fiddleve
I think there still may be the occasional session at Quigley's, but its a bit hit and miss. The landlord was always keen to have a session but it was always hard to get players there on a regular basis. If you fancy giving it a go, let me know.
Otherwise there may be a monthly session at Bow but the landlord's leaving so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
There's also a session, of sorts, at the Rising Sun Umberleigh but Its not always traditional and anything can happen.

Re: sessions in Devon

This confusion about who started the thread is my fault, I tried to start exactly the same thread before going over to Devon for one week in the beginning of November but obviously my post never made it to the board. When I found this one I did not bother to look at the first post, so excuses to everybody :-))
Fiddlevet, I am still curios wether you are a vet but I didnīt leave my email (drdagmar@freenet.de) ?

Re: sessions in Devon

Hi there, after reading your comments on "sessions in Devon" all posted in 2003 does anyone know or want to set up a weekend session of trad. music in or around the Ilfracombe area. Say Saturday night or Sunday morning/afternoon would be the best times. If you are interested please let me know. Many thanks

Re: sessions in Devon

I would support Maire Mhor's suggestion of a weekend session in/around Ilfracombe. Anyone else?
