I was going to just "reply" to the "where are the seesions" thread, but figured this would probably get burried there. Anyway...if any So. Calirtfornians are reading this (or for that matter, anyone who visits So. Cal. now and then), there are several places with sessions, at least two of which are in permanent locations:
1) In the San Fernando Valley at 4843 Laurel Canyon Blvd. in Studio City (or maybe its Valley Village), CA. Celtic sessions (all comers welcome) EVERY Monday night, 9:00 p.m.- midnight (first Monday of every month, session starts at 8:00 p.m.) You can also learn various Celtic dance styles (taught in the hour before sessions) and learn to speak some Gaelic along the way. If you don't play, you can still relax in theater-style seats, watch the sessioners and drink in the music (and maybe some Guiness from the bar, too). Admission to the sessions is free (but you have to pay for your own drinks). I understand they are organizing a "beginner's session" for Sunday afternoons. Although this is a non-profit "membership" organiztion, being a "member" is not required to participate in most activities (they do host some classes in various "celtic" subjects -- some musical, some not --which require a small tuition. P.S.: some really great concerts are held there, too. This past year we've had Andy Irvine, Gerry O'Beirne and Andy Stewart, to name a few, in really up-close-and-personal performances. Check their web page at www.celticartscenter.com.
2) CRAIC (Celtic Regional Arts Institute of California). Another Celtic club in So. Calif. They meet once a month -- in various places I think. Not being a member of that group I have very little hard info on them, but I gather participation in their events is free to group members, but subject to a head charge for non-members. Check their web page at www.craicnet.org. They also list an "info" phone number of (310) 726-3974 and an e-mail address of CRAIC@Compuserve.com.
3) In downtown San Diego, in the "gaslight quarter, is the "Green Fields" pub. They're supposed have some really good sessions there on weekends. I have no info on whether the sessions are open to all or if you have to "know somebody." I do know that the place is generally PACKED on weekend evenings.
