... only if he played tunes. His flat picking tunes thing is tolerable. Dull, but tolerable. Tolerable mostly because you'd have difficulty hearing him.
What about his totally brilliant solo album which was a revelation to what the guitar can achieve in playing reels and jigs solo and still remains the benchmark to this day?Anybody who criticises Arty's playing is very foolish indeed , but , sadly , st paddys day/season seems to bring out the ar~~hole in a lot of people
whoever this LLig guy is obviusly hasnt much music experience to be talking like that...preferences are one thing but to display such outright agression and hate and ignorance towards such a mans application of his own musicality is down right ignorance and is possibly pyschologically disturbing.
it constantly amazes me how much putting down, igorance and hate is on this site
"so much kknowledge" on this site from people like llig?!?!?! ha ha.
why dont people like him/her leave it to the playing and not faceless places like this......
llig, when you can go as many places as arty and be received with great friendship and musical respect and deference , and have his humility and understanding of any situation he is in, then maybe come back to us....
until then just forget about music....just forget about it
Micky, Llig has a great wealth of knowledge and offers some excellent insights here. But he does also tend to state his opinions as if they are hard facts. "All those potentially brilliant albums ... strummed into mediocrity" is his opinion, to which he is entitled. I suspect that it is not an opinion which is widely shared, except amongst a minority of pure drop aficionados.
"Llig has a great wealth of knowledge and offers some excellent insights here".
Yep - true to an extent...the yanks here love him....They copy and paste his comments and everything.....
"except amongst a minority of pure drop aficionados"
Like John Doyle and Liz Carroll? - I like the way he references them by first name too - like they're mates....hehe.
"...state his opinions as if they are hard facts" That bits true.
Remember that time he slagged off Harry Bradley on his own thread?
you know when you go red when you get embarrassed on behalf of someone else? e-cringe? ...icringe? ipuce?....hmmm...
Nope, I'm speculating as indicated by "I suspect ... " at the start of the sentence. Maybe some will post here to give their views one way or the other. Or maybe Llig is the only person in the entire trad community who feels that way.
I can't stand any strumming. This does not mean I dislike people who strum, Arty, included (who was a lovely chap, when I met him). A great guitarist too - I just prefer my music neat. To elaborate: I just don't like backing, or sludge, as I might call it, on a bad night. My opinion is personal taste, and my taste is for the pared-back and the sparse, and letting the tune speak for itself.
(I'm just not in the mood for the fall-out, and nothing is that important at the end of the day - live and let live, sneer, cold-shoulder, go to the bar, do any of the unpleasant and cutting types of behaviour, we've all dealt it and I'm sure have had it dished out in all our times. The permanent old internet makes it slightly embarrassing though, wouldn't you say? People are always still people, and they have feelings to be hurt.)
I Find Arty McGlynn's strumming metronomic and dynamically flat. People who play with him tent to sit behind him, he gets the groove going and that's that and I get the impression that people play over the top of it like they are playing along to a backing track. There is no communication going on between the strumming or the tune playing, no give a take.
To hear what I mean, listen to the recent Matt Molly John Carty album in comparison with the Matt Molloy John Carty on The Full Set programme (it's on youtube)

Jayz, this is going to be a very long list, but what's its point?
Arty's latest appearance is on P.P. Slaggart's 'Down with the Tyrants'.

Oh yeh, llig? I was always told that the best judges of mediocrity were the mediocre. Anyway, at least one of us is knowledgeable on the subject.

i see that now!...
it'll be interesting to see llig's views
rather than just come on and slag someone off, please explain reasons for your opinion.
slagging off is easy, esp in a place like this...but giving reasons is a fair thing to do along with those opinions....
llig, let yours reasons be held up to the scrutiny of others.

I'm not dissing strummers persay. There are plenty of srummers I really like.
