Seeing as it's just around the corner...

Seeing as it's just around the corner...

If I hear "Happy St. Patty's Day" I'm going to throttle someone.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

"Patty" seems to me to be a diminutive for Patricia; but as Canadians tend to pronounce Patty and Paddy identically, I suppose it doesn't matter.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that he tattooed his eyelids blue, according to local prevailing custom.

I can only imagine what my reception would be like at church with said decoration. My how the times have changed.

The only thing good that ever came out of religion was the music.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

I've already had the 'lets sing (fill in the blanks) to Danny Boy" comment and sheepishly given my 20 good reasons not response. Londonderrierre my .....

Someone mumbled something about "When Irish Eyes" and I a apologized that my box was already in its box......

And then next Tuesday is practice for the St. Pat's Mass... with the Liturginazi's attempt to play liturgical faux jigs and reels with a back up band of violinists, oboist, flute player, timpanist and the piano meister...uh one anda two anda.....

And after my blood tests come back later today, I expect the Doc to tell me I have to cut back on Guiness, corned beef and never again even dream of an Ulster Fry.

So I will refrain from HSPD wishes

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

I like "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," a good old fashioned American dance hall tune, the kind my dad used to sing and whistle around the house. And many of the other old standards that people mock. A lot of my friends have fond memories of singing songs like this with relatives at family gatherings. Sorry folks, but I guess I am just not cool enough to look down my nose at the Irish American song tradition.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

How can anyone be annoyed that the day the pent-up wee folk come out (all of them as nude as bees) to dance mad jigs at crossroads with leprechauns, banshees, and former men of the cloth is almost upon us?

A word to the wise: Santa was so angry with me the year I denied Him (three times, to my classmates) that I received a smaller stack of gold ingots than I'd wished for that particular Yule season. Learn, people.

no offense New Drop, but you do know that "former men of the cloth" doesn't mean men who were dressed a minute ago?

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

@zippydw:

What are, er, the *practices* to which the liturgical jigs and reels are an accompaniment?

What are the chances of this music and its context becoming a curious but respected component of American tradition, like Sacred Harp and other things with religious contexts?!..

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

I don't know if I can face it this time. The escape options seem to come down to Sandy Row or Somalia. Somalia has decent weather. Sandy Row has drink. Which should I opt for?

Actually, I'm used to foul weather + drink. I'm totally unaccustomed to good weather + no drink, I would crack up. Unless grazing some narcotic shrub gets me off.

(I.e., Qat...)

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

It's probably being cultivated in houses all round Durham, come to think of it.

I'll have to ask in The Angel.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

Well, now:
Here's to green dye in the Bud Lite -
Green hats and crepe paper shamrock toys -
Kilted pipers marching to "Scotland The Brave" -
'Tis Saint Paddy's Day - isn't it grand, boys?!!

Endrunn Goh Braww, or something like that,
anyway, up the Irish,
and them as thinks of themselves as Irish,
those who loves the Irish,
and the rest who like the Irish,
and those who really do not care,
but just love a good party, and some banjo music with a good rousing sing-along chorus that you can still remember and pronounce half -right even when you are three sheets to the wind on Irish Coffee laced with a double shot of Wilson's Straight Rye Whiskey and a great big "SCHLOOORRK!!" of Reddi-Wip on top.

And green jimmies.
Gotta have 'em.
Yum.

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

Nicholas, if the choices are foul weather and drink or good weather and no drink, I will take the combination of foul weather and drink and drink to this combination with some bottles of my favorite poison (Shiner Bock).

Re: Seeing as it's just around the corner...

nicholas

Context is to provide aproper religious framing for a holiday that in the States is nothing more than a grand opportunituy for the amateurs of any race, creed, sex, sexual preference and national origin to drink til they puke.

Despite many well intended culural exercises, the 'holiday' has been stolen by the mass marketers.

And chance of the liturgical "practice" surviving. Probably not much. As the folks who participate die off and are replaced by the puking group, its unlikely the church will be the beneficiary of increased patronage.
