In praise of A dorian reels

In praise of A dorian reels

I've always disliked minory double tonic type reels on A. Not for any real reason based on merit its just I always found them to be a bit generic (especially the B parts) and difficult to internalise.

Anyway just over the last couple of days I've been working on a set made of the Sligo Maid, the Swallow's Tail and the Knotted Chord and am feeling a wee glow of satsifaction that I can actually distinguish and play these tunes without confusion. Planning to add the Congress on the end there as that's another I've always struggled with. Interestingly I've never had this problem with Rakish Paddy or Dinkies.

Does anyone know what I'm on about?

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

I prefer gin and tonic rather than minory double tonic myself.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

The scintillating craic you get on this here putrid board is all the tonic I need I can tell you.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Aye, for tonic laced with heavy doses of sarcasm you can't beat it.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Turn away from putridity and instead turn back toward the plashing of waterfalls and twittering larks in the verdant land of musical self-discovery.:-)

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Given the level of discussion on the Mellow Board today (i.e. http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/23927), I don't fancy his chances of discovering plashing waterfalls and twittering larks. At least not here.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Mmmm plashing. Funny you should use sonorous yet archaic term. I only learned the term myself about 20 seconds ago or so.

Every day's a school day.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Do you find that the gin & tonic completes the rock climbing, horse riding, land rovering, uilleann piper image?

# Posted on March 1st 2010 by Jams_O'Donnell

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Is that an image?

It definitely would if I really drank G&Ts. As you know, I'm a sucker for snobby cask ales. Mmmmmm.... beer.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

I think cask ale drinking, rock climbing, horse riding, land rovering uilleann piper is an image whether you like it or not.

Now I'd hate to read your character assassination of me "scratchy scraper who repeats tunes to often and takes sheet music to the pub".

Shouldn't you be working seeing as you've driven 100 or so miles to be there?

Hi Dave,

anyone can join in, this is the internet after all, the home of enlightened and erudite discourse. Join in please especially if they you are going to discuss the vagaries of enamourment with A dorian reels.

Boatpiper, I don't really take sheet music to the pub but if you do end up touching cloth then TheSilverSpear has a little sheet of bog paper* she keeps under her chanter that I'm sure you can use.

* At least I think that's what it is.

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

"We beat the dog when grandma passes gas." Can't remember which movie that one came from.

And I can't keep A Dorian reels straight, either.

But I am partial to gin and tonics made with Cascade Mountain Gin, which is flavored with juniper berries gathered from local trees. No larks twitter in them, although nuthatches have been know to rootle around in the branches.

Perhaps spring fever is invading the Mustard Board....

Re: In praise of A dorian reels

Rootle, what a lovely word. I might try doing that instead of noodleing, quietly of course so as not to put anyone else off ;-)

Nah, Jams. Your fiddle playing is grand. It's your grammar which deserves a slagging. I think "too" was the word you were looking for. : p

I was steamin' by the time you took out the sheet music. So I was just happy you could play McFadyen's Handsome Daughter with me, however you did it. A threesome is a threesome.....
