"Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

Got an email about this this morning. Search for collection:"Comhaltas Sound Publications" and you can hear all the tracks from their LPs, back to 1967's Rambles of Kitty, which has been available for download from them for some time. What is more, these tracks aren't "watermarked" as they describe it - "needle-into-eardrum" would be closer to the mark...

Along with all the CCÉ tour LPs I see Tommy People's Exciting Experience and John Doherty's John Doherty LPs, and both Seoda Ceoils. Outtakes from the latter are still in the main archive. Also records from Tom Pháidín Ó Coistealbha, Bobby Gardiner, Breandán Ó Dúill, the Longridge Céilí Band, the Ceol an Chláir LP, etc. Thanks much, Comhaltas!

Yes, a treasure trove. I got the news too and immediately sent it on to others... I'll second that appreciation, a growing one for the growth of such online resources and inspirations...

I really do plan to fix those 'explosions' soon, I promise! At least make 'em a bit gentler for sensitive ears .....

But as you noticed, because the artists on the Comhaltas LPs were recording for Comhaltas specifically, we can make the tracks available for non-commercial use without the restrictions that we have to apply to field recordings.

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

It's a fantastic resource which I'm grateful for. It is a shame that the can't be heard in full clarity - perhaps some day a copyright loophole or compromise can be found.

In the mean time, thanks for all your effort Brendan.

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

This is certainly wonderful! Um, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but why are the clips only 30 seconds long?

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

I got the full length clips after I created an account (which is free).

Comhaltas archive. Missing Accompanists

I notice that accompanists aren't always acknowledged. Have certain pronouncements of Tony MacMahon infiltrated Cultúrlann na hÉireann :-)

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

We certainly do our best on the acknowledgements, but we don't always have the original information available. But if you can help us identify people on any of the tracks, you are very much encouraged to add them!

If you move over the Tune, People and Keyword lists on the lower-left side of the page, you'll find that you can suggest new people, tunes and keywords directly.

Cheers!

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

It's a wonderful resource, I get lost in the list and listen until the explosions start making my dogs nervous. It would be great if there were some way of letting it be more listenable. Thanks for your efforts! Don

Re: "Comhaltas Sound Publications" - archive sans explosions

For those wondering about the fate of the explosions, I submit the following for your perusal:

http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/ctma/watermark/beeped1.mp3
http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/ctma/watermark/beeped2.mp3
http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/ctma/watermark/beeped3.mp3
http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/ctma/watermark/beeped4.mp3
http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/ctma/watermark/beeped5.mp3

Those samples are along the lines of what I had in mind for the revised "watermark" sound. This might be too subtle, but it's an indication of direction.

I'm working on some scripts to affect the streaming versions of recordings that will filter out some of the extreme top and low end (which is mostly noise on these tapes), and to calculate amplitude and renormalise to some extent. Then the beep itself, which will probably be higher-frequency and blend better with the amplitude of the program material.

Comments welcome, of course!
