Last night my B&D Silver Bell was stolen out of my car. It is a series 1, with a chili pepper strap. I love this instrument and am deeply distressed about the loss. The theft occurred in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, New York. Please keep an eye out for it if you are in the greater New York area.
Just to let you know, I've notified all our members over on the 'Irish Tenor Banjo' site & I've also posted details & link to here, on the site itself. See:
Thanks folks! I really, really love this banjo. And, I love playing banjo even though my main instrument is flute. I think I may have to put another flute up for sale if this banjo doesn't show up. Just can't live without it!
Apart from offering commiserations, I can only say that this reinforces my belief one should never leave an instrument unattended in a car, whoever securely it may appear to be locked.
A friend of mine had just bought a very nice guitar, some while ago, and was returning home from a session. His car had also been lightly rear-ended recently, so that while the damage looked minimal, the boot ( trunk to you in the US of A ) would shut but not lock. Nevertheless, as it was out of sight in the boot, he left it in there while he filled up with petrol ( gas to you in..) at a garage ( filling station...). Whilst he was inside paying for the petrol somebody casually walking past opened the boot, picked out the guitar in its hard case, and scarpered.
His insurance company would not pay up as they said it was in an unlocked car ! Beestards !
This time last year at the Frances Folk Gathering in South Australia one of our musicians had his rather valuable guitar stolen . He eventually got it back in one piece, undamaged. One of the suggestions I made was that the culprit have his photograph distributed via the internet but I received a lot of negative or apathetic feedback . I hope you get your B&D back and if you do show us a photo of the thief so we can all be on the lookout for these parasites.
Not involving an instrument but along the lines of T O'R's post.
At an auction I was running back when I was still active in the antiques business one of my ring staff noticed a lad pocketing a gold watch. We followed him outside and confronted him (he tried to hide the watch a top the tire of a parked car). I gave him a choice, I could call the police and file charges or he could come back inside the sale room and allow me to introduce him as a thief to the near four hundred honorable folks in attendance as well as add his photo to the "wall of scoundrels". He opted to not have me call the police.
We never saw the lad again!
I say expose these reprobates and to hell with the bleeding hearts!
Sorry it was taken, Do you have serial #s etc. ? That might track it. You should notify every pawn shop in NYC, and environs, Newark, Hoboken, Long Island, etc. Or better, reprot to police in every possible town.
If you want to send a detailed description and any other info, I can add it to our next IAANJ mailing. Should go out early next week.

Re: Stolen banjo
Awful. As I said on another recent banjo theft thread, I hate it when musicians lose their instruments. It's just wrong.
Is it banjo season or something?

Re: Stolen banjo
Hi there imnot!
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's not just that you can maybe replace it. Evrey instrument has its own touch and sensitivity of response.
I do pray that it might be recovered yet.
I can only amplify the comments about cars and instruments.
so often peopole say "Oh it's okay, leave it in the boot".
I might look ungainly, it might seem odd walking into a pub wherer you're not playing, but at least I know I have my instruments with me.
Llkewise I hope your friend might have some success too Pete.
Best to all
Brian xx
