Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

No more worries regarding errant bodhran player's elbows, random bow strokes from fiddlers, or swinging necks from banjo and guitar players -

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

It sounds to me a very good idea. As long, that is, as its R&D and production costs don't spiral into gazillions and then come home to roost as a tax on drink.

Of course, it is also devoutly to be wished that the whole thing should be funded by decent hard-working clean-living people who live blameless lives in prosperous zones where pint glasses are not standard weaponry, and the screws are not put on those of us who lurk in hinterlands where human interaction, especially after 36 lagers, can be random and disconcerting.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

When I was a boy - maybe 50 years ago - my uncle Don, at every Christmas gathering, would jokingly pull out these drinking glasses he acquired that someone had invented for institutions (yes, that kind of institution), and bounce one off the fireplace chimney as a joke.

As I recall the dishwasher was their downfall.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

They still need to put magnetic bottoms in the glasses, and have steel table-tops, so the careless elbow doesn't spill the drink.
I don't think I've ever been in a session where the musicians are in danger. Other parts of the bar, maybe, but they tend to leave us alone, regarding us as non-combatents.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that the glasses pictured are women's glasses.

Proper men's glasses have a handle.

In the good old days at our session - mebbe about 15 years back - a man came into the bar and asked old Mrs B for 2 glasses of lager. She (of course) despised lager drinkers anyway, but when he saw her get a couple of pint pots down, and he said "Can I have straight glasses please" she didn't turn or alter her movement in any way, but said loud and clear "Only if you're a poof". She then served the lager in pots with handles.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

You're absolutely right, showaddy!

Show me a pub that serves real ale only from wooden casks, and only in proper glasses with handles, and I start up a session there!

... sadly, I don't think any such pub exists any more .... :-(

No it doesn't depend where you live - that's just a picture of a barman serving a pint of theakstons to a woman.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Hmmn - like to see a singer shatter one of those using their voice.

Safety-wise, not much of a breakthrough, really - we are about a month away from green beer in paper cups over hear.

We have not had an injury yet from a paper pint glass, to my knowledge, save collisions causing spillage.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

No, guys. I think its sort of a regional "country boy gone to town" thing. In a pub where they offer the choice I have sometimes been amused when someone feeling out of place gets their second pint in a different glass. Real men stick to their decision.

If you're just embarrassed about the fact that you like drinking out of a girl's glass - go right ahead and admit it, then we can all have a good laugh at your expense.

The whole point of being in a mob is to be able to pick on the weak and disadvantaged, laugh at the uneducated, and generally mock the afflicted, so don't deny us our right.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

The same lager despising landlady mentioned earlier was once asked by a customer who "wasn't from round here" for two halves of lager and a tomato juice.

Her response was "It's not a cocktail bar".

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

MixO'

What the **** is all that froth for? Real man's beer has only enough foam at the top to leaf a ring to denot each swig.

As for women drinking out of pint pots - I've no problem with that.

Anyone remember the fight scene in "The Big Bus" - where the guy picks up a cardboard carton of milk and smashes the top on the edge of the table . . . . .

it's probably time for my pills soon.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Time was in the UK (maybe up to about 25 years ago) when all pubs served beer in mugs with handles. But after that, those straight sided glasses insiduously began to take over. :-(

Was it because customers complained about the mugs with handles, and demanded straight sided glasses?

It was not. :-(

I'm told that the reason those glasses were brought in was because the (then) new glass-washing machines couldn't cope with glasses with handles. So nothing do do with customer preference - it's just about saving labour and thus making more profit.

I'm not so keen on German hyper-efficiency, (or their lager), but at least they preserved their tradition of drinking beer out of mugs with handles! :-)

# Posted on February 8th 2010 by Mix O'Lydian

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

The only thing I might really get worked up about regarding what beer is served in, and we need to keep an eye our lager drinking neighbours over this, is the volume of the container.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Jayzus, 47 posts about mugs with handles. Did I wander into the Bavarian Folk Forum by mistake this morning? What a buncha wackjobs. Put the lederhosen down and step away from the Fraulein, nice and slow there pally, good lad.

...and now, from the article...

"There are about 87,000 alcohol-related glass attacks each year..."

"Oh, those nasty Yanks, they're so violent, glad we're so superior. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the pub to go get in a nice alcohol-related glass fight. Cheers!"

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Well said Boatpiper.

Having led a rather eclectic musical life over the past 30 years, I can speak from 1st hand experience as to which drinking vessels inflict the most damage. Punk/Metal clubs favor lobbed long-neck bottles tossed end over end. In most cases they are easily dodged since your average poodle-headed rocker kid is rather uncoordinated. I once had a bong thrown at me in a Reggae/ska club, and I've seen hundreds of pint glasses shattered in Irish pubs. But nothing hurts quite as much as a well thrown shot glass by an angry, drunk cowboy when you forget the lyrics to a favorite George Straight song.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Bad news for the bodhran.

You have all met those people who play a rhythm on a glass in the bar, usually with a coin?

Non breakable glasses? They will be beating them with large spoons now.

Ah well, could be the end of the traditional session, as only "traditional" sessions have bodhrans.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Having been conditioned in the same pub as Showadaddy* I now take a positive delight in asking a spotty young barperson if I can have my pint in a pot. Some places don't even have them. As they don't make them any more I buy them in charity shops every time I see them.

Of course in my local they know I have a pot and I don't have to ask any more. They've recently got a rather good imported German lager on but serve in vases. Doesn't seem to phase the young 'uns though.

* Everyone who has been to this pub has a story. The first time I went in was around 1983 and I was a spotty young art student, a heavy rock fan complete with leather jacket, denim cutoff and long hair. As I was actually picking up my Dad at the time, I though I'd only better have a half. Upon self-consciously asking for my beer in a bar full of big men in overalls smelling of cow c r a p Mrs. B leant over the bar to me and said in a very loud voice "Are you a lad or a lass?". It's not the same these days. It's changed hands and they've taken the smell away from the gents as well as having ice and crisps and curry nights and - horror - even a golf statuette on the windowsill.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

This landlady was about 80, and as is the way with elderly ladies she sported a fair amount of facial hair.

A certain piper who appears on this board once arrived at said pub and was challenged by dear old Mrs B. that he hadn't shaved - to which he replied "neither have you".

Er, please tell me if I'm just being dense, but wasn't Pyrex invented years and years ago?

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Joe - you're being dense.

These aren't made of pyrex.

Pyrex ones would be for serving hot beer.

Re: Important technological breakthrough for sessions!

Are we not missing a a point (in Dublin, a drink?)...like being able to take a drink without the need to exercise some form of brain surgery?

Maybe that's the difference from the older style sessions, let alone pubs, where one "learned to drink", and one generally was known within that community.

Sessions tended to be in those sorts of pubs, maybe not so much now perhaps back in England?
