Rare Bothy Band recording on RnG tonight

A 1975 Bothy Band concert will be broadcast for the first time tonight (Sunday) on Radio na Gaeltachta at 8.30pm. So it will.

Re: Rare Bothy Band recording on RnG tonight

Anyone catch the 2nd set of tunes (it was a pair of jigs) that Matt Molloy played solo? I recognise both tunes but can't put names to them. Can anyone help me out?

Re: Rare Bothy Band recording on RnG tonight

That was a wonderful concert recording; they even played some tunes I hadn't heard from them before. Wonder if this was recorded before or after the '1975' album? And where has the tape been hidden all these years?

Raidió na Gaeltachta were slightly naughty at the end. The band played a final set of tunes and then launched into the song 'Casadh an tSugáin'. The sound quality was noticibly better, and in stereo for this song. When the programme finished, the presenter said it was a BB concert 'recorded in 1975' at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in Dublin. Only 'Casadh an tSugáin' was recorded in Paris in 1978! Ah well, I suppose RnaG had a few minutes to fill in...

It was all-round wonderful, but there was some awful bodhran on the Kesh set. The mic was probably too close to the drum, but it was awful whether or not. But the whole thing had me in delirious raptures. :-)

Hi Paul!

Just saw your post and obviously missed the programme; not much chance of me seeing it here in dear Tassie!

I don't need much reminding of how much energy BB generated when in concert, be it full on reel sets driven by Keenan's powerhouhouse pipes, Molloy's weaving flute lines and Burkes lyrical fiddle with soaring and cascading harmony lines such as in Martin Wynne's.

I was fortunate enough to hear them live 4 times, and various permutations of them many more.

for those who've only heard the recordings, believe me, they were awesome!

Sorry, should have added, that Micheal and Triona also sang in their tongue wehich was a brave big step forward and the harmonic treatment afforded the songs was quite remarkable.

Sad loss when Micheal passed on the other year. Such a nice guy too.

Brian,
I saw your comment of having missed the Bothy on RnG the other night. I have a copy on Mp3 which I have shrunk down to 8kbps@16MHz making 7kB file which I could send if you give me your e-mail - hope you are keeping well and the injury allows you to get back into the tunes - let me know if you ever visit the UK in the future - cheers
All the best
Derek
