Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

I think it's simply 'Riverdance' by Bill Whelan.

I don't know what the gaelic stuff is you wrote though.

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Why do you need to know the name of the tune ?
Either learn it and play it, or shut up about it.
Personally I reckon you should go and find your own tunes; having been bored to death, for instance, by people singing "Man of Constant Sorrow" the way they did it in that Coen Bros movie, especially when there are much more pleasant versions of that song, I say "Find your own tunes."
Originality should be recognized as a much more pleasing approach to repertoire, although unfortunately the general public don't get this.

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Relax Guernsey Pete. Someone likes a tune and wants to know its name. I don't understand why people get so worked up about Riverdance. I don't think it's ever promoted itself as ITM, just as it hasn't promoted itself as traditional flamenco or tap dance. So why do ITM purists allow it to annoy them so much? Going by the reaction I've read here over the years, anyone would think that Riverdance has stepped on your toes in some way. I saw it on TV once. Very entertaining. Great music too by that Bill Whelan. I don't think anyone from your 'general public' really mistakes the music for hard core trad Irish, unless they're a bit damp in the attic. Besides, Riverdance is a global music and dance show. And it was quite original in its time. Happy New Year.

Cian O Gallchobhair: if you have time try the Countess Cathleen from Riverdance. It's probably in the database here. I don't know what you play but it sounds great on the mandolin.

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

When RD first came through here (San Francisco) it was being promoted as 'traditional Irish music and dance'. The promoters were responsible for that and not the artists. There was an outcry against this promotional verbiage and it was changed the next time it came through. I never learned the theme music and I have never heard it played in a session. If someone started it and played it well I wouldn't object to it. If someone liked it enough to learn it or its name, I wouldn't criticize them for it or try to discourage them. If someone claimed it was Irish trad I might have an argument against that position.

A person asks a simple question and some ^^&(*((*^$ has the nerve to jump on him. Lovely people out there.

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Additionally, there are some folk who don't like the Clancy brothers, or even the Kingston Trio. But for some of these pioneers trad music may have stayed hidden. Some people who love this music were exposed to it as a result of those artists and even Riverdance.

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Never saw River Dance but I just youtubed it and can see why Pete reacted the way he did. Not my cup of tea either. The question will always bother me as to why the general public needs all the bells and whistles. It seemed to me a hideous spectacle filled with a cast of, no doubt, very talented people. But this is the opinion of a person who's favorite spot is a room in an old barn heated by a wood stove....far far away from theaters, malls, crowds....

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

A friend emailed me and said he wasn't sticking his head above the parapet ( on this one ) !
Riverdance is fine if it leads you on to the proper trad stuff. If it just leaves you obsessed with playing that tune, then it's bad. By the way, don't try to play that "Found Harmonium " tune either....

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Patrick Street played a great version of Found Harmonium, I love it. New Penguin Cafe Orchestra is playing at Celtic Connections and I'd imagine they'll be playing it there as well. Not ITM, but no one ever said it was, even if it did matter in the slightest. Anyway Cian O Gallchobhair, I hope the extremely rude comments at the beginning of this thread don't deter you from your journey (whatever that is and wherever it takes you). Focus on the helpful comments and throw out the sh*t.

I don't know any of the tunes in Riverdance, but isn't there a few, more than just one? I think someone said this, but there is a tune called Riverdance. Search in the tunes section and see if that's the one you're looking for. You might also do a search in the recordings section here on this site, someone has probably added the Riverdance production here at some point, so it's a good bet you'll find the tune you're looking for. Good luck.
Cheers,

Re: What is the name of the tune played in riverdance?

Some of us are basically just snobs, hoist on our own petard;
we want only the good traditional tunes, played in an inclusive open session, by people who talk to us and welcome our contributions, and encourage the beginner and newcomer whilst fostering the highest talents to new heights.
Just don't play "The Lonesome Boatman"; or ask for "The Fields of Athenry"........
