iPhone - Uilleann Pipes drone and reg App.

Hi,
Have you seen this Uilleann pipe app for the iPhone? Fantastic technology, talk about traditional arts making full use of modern technology! Watch the man play the phone with the pipes at the end of the youtube clip. I just need an iPhone now and maybe I can play it with my toes and the fiddle at same time.

It looks really cool. Wish it had a chanter though. Is there a tinwhistle app? Michael?

Here's the video showing using the app with my toe while playing the anglo concertina:

Whistle players can also use their elbow, it works quite well...

Should be interesting to see what sorts of interesting ways people use the app...

Re: iPhone - Uilleann Pipes drone and reg App.

The problem with the iPhone/iPod Touch is that they only allow up to 5 simultaneous touches, a whistle required 6 and a chanter requires 8, so any simulation would require some non-standard fingering system. The company that did "Ocarina" only uses 4 touch areas in a staggered formation.

There's probably some way to do it that would not be too awful to figure out...

Re: iPhone - Uilleann Pipes drone and reg App.

Michael, it's not so bad for the 5 "touch" limitation.

On the whistle, you could make it so that the 5 last holes are always a D, even for first octave. I play the high D with only the 5 last fingers so not a big deal... The first 5 fingers would play an E like a normal whistle. It's very close to the real thing.

The problem is switching octave, that's problematic if you are limited to 5 touch... can't switch octave while playing a note that requires 5 fingers.

Re: iPhone - Uilleann Pipes drone and reg App.

yeah, there is. 5 touches will cover whistle. In the leaf trombone app, the app figures out if you're blowing into the mic to function. If the app can figure out low and high velocity breathing, it can pop the octave.

However - damn. It's ridiculous. But I suppose that's the point.

If you purchased 3QuarterSet, I would very much appreciate if you would post a rating and review on iTunes, it only takes a few moments.

I think it's a really cute little app. It'd fit quite nicely with the vPipes, one would think... An electronic 7/8 set!
