Tune identification...

Hi folks,

Does anyone recognise this tune?

X:1
T:Laridé 6
M:2/2
L:1/4
K:Emin
E2 B2 | A c B2 | A>B A F | G A B2 | E2 B2 | A c B2 | A>B A F | G F E2 :|
E2 G2 | G E F2 | F A A F | G A B2 | E2 G2 | G E F2 | F>G A B | G F E2 :|

I'm pretty sure it's French, but it's played at our local Irish session, so I'm hoping someone might recognise it and know something about it. (Like whether that's actually the correct title; and whether it's traditional or a recent composition...)

I've found a couple of clips of it on YouTube under the name "Suite Laridé", but I suspect this just means a collection of Laridés, so not very helpful.

Thanks.

Re: Tune identification...

Laridé 6 means 'Laridé à Six Temps'. It is a Breton kind of tune and as far as I know very few of the Breton tunes have distinct names (apart from vague geographical references like 'Gavotte des Montagnes'). So having the tune may be as far as you can get.

But you can try http://breizhpartitions.free.fr/

Re: Tune identification...

The Laridé à Six Temps is a wonderful piece - I've arranged it for the harp and it's a great one to play.

...although I've just looked at the music posted above and it's not the one I recognise - but it does also happen to be a great tune!

Re: Tune identification...

Laridés (or ridées) are a family of dances orginating from the Pays Vannetais region of Brittany, NW France.

Your tune must therefore be the melody that accompanies one of those dances.

You could probably find out more from the listed contacts on one of the several Breton websites that cover traditional music and dance of the region.

Bretons are very keen to preserve and promote their traditions, and I've always found them very helpful.

However, when making contact with Breton traditionalists, always use English (assuming that you don't know Breton!) - NOT French! And never talk about a Breton tune as being a French tune!

Good luck in your quest!

Re: Tune identification...

You wouldn't be in Oxford would you, rtarnell? I got it out of a 'book' and play it at my local 'Irish' session...

Re: Tune identification...

Thanks everyone. So, perhaps it doesn't even have a name.

I'm curious to know what "Six Temps" refers to - my local French speaker didn't know. (Or rather, it's one of those words with several meanings depending on context...)
