Thanksgiving Day

by Arthur Nordstrom

C6 G F
Now comes the ris- ing sun,
C6 G C6
With hues of red and gold,
C6 G F
The pump- kin pies are done,
C6 G C6
Hand made not bought and sold.

Little doggy whimpers
He needs his morning run.
The kitten softly purrs.
Her cat nap yet undone.

I take him by the leash,
And down the road I lead.
The world it seems at peace,
Sadly, an endless need.

Now back into home place,
I guide my furry friend.
This day meant to seed grace,
Will hurry to its end.

Yet creeping despair,
Descends upon my mind.
What I've judged most unfair,
Is yet repaid in kind.

For what should I give thanks?
Oh, how to mold a prayer!
Broken by Devil's pranks.
Justice beyond repair.

While in the world about,
Some face the roadside bomb.
Where children die and pout,
In homes turned into tombs.

Do wealth and holidays
But camouflage the dark?
A cold, rich nation's way,
Of curbing frank remarks?

I settle in my chair,
And shake off cold and chill.
I'll not lose to despair.
I'll temper broken will.

This rich man's bacchanal,
Will not from me hope steal.
Today I will give thanks,
I can compassion feel.

I'm not really familiar with american festivals, but as I understand it, turkeys come into the equation somewhere ...

... this being the case, might "Turkey in the Straw" be the tune that you are looking for?

(I like to be topical, and for this reason I played it at one our sessions earlier this week (in England) - but none of the other musicians made the connection!)

my family likes to sing the old traditional "roll up the windows and lock the doors, to grandmother's house we go"

happy thanksgiving!

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

Never mind the tunes, where do 'Er Indoors and myself take our half-American vegetarian children for a Thanksgiving dinner? Think we'll just go ethnic - after all, all Americans are immigrants !

you could get a tofurky - you have to pre-order them here, but I'm guessing they're still on the shelves in London...

The Blarney Pilgrim is a good Thanksgiving title, though I think they were technically Puritans.

Cherokee Nation played as a lament perhaps

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

Thanks for the list of tunes, oldstrings. I was a bit torn when I took out my "Celtic Flute Christmas" yesterday, contemplating whether I might be better served by simply referencing "101 Session Tunes" and finding pieces such as "As I Went Out Upon the Ice".

As someone with "half vegetarian" leanings, sorely hampered by a carnivorous upbringing, I usually find anything tofu unsatisfying. The veggie meat crumbles in the freezer department are okay for chili. I once found some packaged beef and chicken nuggets in a broth that made okay Beef Burgundy and Chicken Curry, but not as good as with real meat (IMHO).

As for the Cherokee Nation comment. Please keep in mind that some estimate that 80% of the native peoples of North America were wiped out by European diseases such as small pox long before Louis' sale of territory brought the U.S. army into constant conflict with them. The number of subsequent slaughters, and old legends about Andrew Jackson and his soldiers stripping the flesh from native's following a battle to make tack for their horses are all rather troubling, causing one to reflect on how Americans may treat those they regard as "not one of us" in a historical context.

Not to do Mr. McGonagall any slight, I modified my effort to improve conformance to meter and rhyme. All that remains is the dedication in his name! ;-)

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

Truly no offence. I just wonder what First Nation people have to be thankful about at this time and what the impact of American invasion will be on Afghan and Iraqi traditonal music not that I see many trad sessions listed.

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

What would you have us do, all move back to the fertile crescent??? Everybody came from somewhere else.
sheesh...
I wonder what music was played at the funerals after 9-11...
and I don't believe that you meant no offense.
Been to a Hard Rock lately? goes right into the Seminole's pockets. They are quite thankful on the rez west of us for the number of folks visiting their casinos this weekend.
Everybody has a sob story if you go back far enough.

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

Well my friend. Why do they have to depend on casinos? Why do so many yanks have to steal Irish music when there is First Nation Music close to hand? Truly no offence. If you were here I would offer you some Irish Whiskey and a bit of harp music and we would have a lovely time. I have no idea what a Hard Rock is, is it like 'a rock and a hard place?'. Let us just rejoice in this day when the Irish rugby players did so well against the South Africans. Non-sectarian Ireland against non-racial South Africa at Croke Park. A great occasion. Will the USA cricket team fare so well against the Afghan cricket team? Or will they all be forced to play baseball at the point of a gun?

Re: Any new Thanksgiving Tunes? ("Over The River"...Over the Hill.)

"Truly no offence" is BS.
and you are truly showing your ignorance.
You folks in Ireland have really shown us all how to live in peace, eh? no offense.

Thankyou America for the potatoes and subsequent famine but I forgive all for the Simpsons.
