Mick Hanly - "The Guerriere and the Constitution"

Mick Hanly - "The Guerriere and the Constitution"

In the liner notes of As I Went Over Blackwater, Mick Hanly describes that the lyrics for "The Guerriere and the Constitution" were taken from the Penguin Book of Folk Ballads. While the lyrics are from a printed source, he says he had to make up the tune himself because the book didn't provide one. It's a very nice tune he invented and the result is fantastic. 8-)

But after reading the notes and listening to the lyrics, I remembered this tune "Hull's Hornpipe" http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/9606; while researching it shortly after it was posted here (War of 1812 is something of a hobby of mine.... maybe it's all the live oak around here that was used for the building of American frigates...) I came across a source of very similar lyrics with an accompanying tune.

So now it looks as if we have two ways to sing the song: Hanly's, and the older one printed here: http://books.google.com/books?id=tKYNAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA223&l#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Maybe someone could make a set out of it, playing to both tunes to complete the verses in the song, two keys and everything.

That first tune linked to is Hull's Victory, sorry, not Hull's Hornpipe.

Do you fancy posting up the lyrics? This is a great little song, and it's nice to see part of its evolution across oceans and centuries.
