i'm off to town tomorrow, and want to pick up a decent harmonica brace.
last time i tried this i was sold a overpriced malformed coathanger, which doesnt quite do the trick.
any ideas where?
I buy my "accessories" from www.elderly.com. They list 3 Harmonica Holders, a "Hohner", a "Harp Handle", and a "Lee Oskar". Incidentally, I have no connection with the company
If you must play the orthodontic harmonica, Hohner makes a spring-loaded job that's likely to keep the instrument pretty stable while you're puffing away. However, I see no reason why you must do this, and beg you to reconsider. Think of all the good and pleasant sounds you could make, and steer away from the dark side.
I've tried 'em but gave up years ago after straining my neck to keep close enough to the damn thing. The hands around the harp form an essential component of the sound-chamber that gives you a good, full tone and the potential for tonal expression. To hear what harmonica-playing is like without this you only have to listen to the ghastly squawkings of Dylan and his acolytes.
They are much abused and much maligned. You are limited to fairly basic playing, but there are some players that use them to great effect e.g. Rick Epping & one of the Murphys of Wexford use then to play harp and concertina simultaneously (see youtube)
You used to be able to get ones that can be adjusted for height/reach etc. thus reducing neck strain. Dylan now plays moslty without and can actually play harmonica quite well.
Hobgoblin, Rathbone Place, just off the eastern end of Oxford Street, should surely have something.
Or there's the whole of TinPan Alley, just south of Tottenham Court Road. Someone must have a decent one.
Pay down the nose. There are no bargains. Only if you really must. Apropos of those who like to play harmonica as well as summat else at the same time, they are showing off. Playing Irish music is not about showing off, nor is the particular instrument ever the point of the music. Stick the thing in your mitts and really play it.
Anyway, rumpole, aren't you the President of the EU now? How can you afford the time to play all those instruments? Can't you sort out that bloody cheat Thierry Henry first?
GP, thats what i did last time, and i gotz me a coathanger.
SS, after your last post i checked my mail, theres nothing about the EU so i think they went for someone else. however there is a post backlog due to a strike, so you never know.....
before too many people get upset, i do not do *anything* with harmonicas and irish music. i just thought someone here might know.

Re: harmonica brace/london
Ah, "Rompuy" it was. An excusable confusion. I sold him a neckbrace once. He sent it back because it didn't conform to a directive or something.
