I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

There was a comment a little while ago on the (not-so) sean-nós dancing in the Oireachtas finals ... and that's been about it for ages. This is a great site for discussing Irish music and *what* to play for dancing, but there's precious little about the dancing itself.

Does anyone know of any good sites/forums where Irish (and/or other trad/folk dancing) is discussed in a knowlegeable way. I don't mean the "can I use sock glue on my wig?" kind of question - or dancing ;-) - but something with a bit more meat to it. Right now, I want to ask the question: "Anyone ever noticed the similarities between Basque footwork and Irish steps?"

Wig Glue Question.

The very best wig glue is SyrupStik followed closely by Hair Hat Araldite. Don't use sock glue.
Have I ever mentioned my collection of hot water bottles of the famous? I have Matt Munro's 1959 pink rubber Snugglebunnie.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Has anyone ever tried Super Glue for this purpose?

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Yes but the results are disasterous!
Even the most commited perook wearer wants to remove it in the toilet for instance (esp when puking) and Super Glue is just too...er!?...super.

A case of disastrous spelling methink!

I found a French Yahoo Group. I don't read French, maybe you can. http://www.attchoo-dtw.com/
Groupe de discussion des adhérents et/ou élèves de l'association Attchoo-Dancin'the World. Pour partager des informations, des avis, des suggestions sur les événements (stages, cours, festivals...) ayant trait à toute forme de danse.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

For bazouki dave,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZf5XxNJlA8 - Arin-Arin, "dressed up" to be a bit mediaeval-looking,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTKNAKINASs - same dance done in tradition costume.

http://zapatosardientes.canalblog.com/archives/2006/05/07/4642953.html - webpage (in French) with numerous videos showing the typical Basque "céilí" dances.

Straight off, these dances may not look much like Irish step dancing, but when you compare them to the more widespread "normal" French dances, the characteristics they share with Irish are more noticeable. The music's more fun to play too.

That dancecallerlist looks to be the most like what I'm looking for ... but I haven't got a Yahoo ID so can't access it properly. :-(

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

I love playing for dancers. It's a great source of dialogue.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Like being a human stereo playing a 33 1/3 on 45. Ya minus well paste a "Play" and "Stop" button on yer forehead.

That's for set dancers.

For the girls with the curls, it's like like being a human stereo playing a 45 on 33 1/3. Ya minus well paste a "Play" and "Stop" button on yer forehead.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

OK, that was the cranky musician knee-jerk answer. Now for something (hopefully) more enlightened.

Playing for dancers is something all musicians should do at least once, for both types of dancers too. It's a great learning experience which really displays the connection to the original source of the music, dance.

However, and this may actually get back to the original post a bit, as to why the musicians on here speak so little of dance, playing for dancers is just that, playing FOR dancers.

Musicians like playing FOR themselves best of all, so...2+2=...

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Long time since I have been on here.. but both types of dancers? Last I checked there were more than two types of dancers in ITM?

As for the step dancers... what is with the wigs and the outfits that they are wearing these days? Not that they should have to go back to the boring outfits of the 1970s... but the current ones just well.. look scary.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Hi Bill, SWFL here and my odd sense of humor.

Yes, two kinds:

1. Couples dancing sets
2. Not couples dancing sets

Now you chuckle and smile. Cheers!

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

I used to be a set dancer, but I'm hard pushed to get even one other partner for a two-hand reel 'round these parts ... :-( but for all that I miss set and céilí dancing, I'm inclined to agree with the Play-Stop opinion as regards the music. These days, I alternate between playing and dancing, and the traditional French dances give both dancers and musicians the opportunity for mutual satisfaction that doesn't seem to be there in Irish dancing. I think the sean-nós style lends itself much more to a healthy two-way relationship.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Rambler
I might be giving some set dance classes in Anger in the spring interested ?
( wow what an opening for a plug :-) )
I dont agree with the play -stop opinion as its play stop start play stop start play stop start not much difference to a normal session anyway.

Re: I'm a dancer, let me out of here!

Angers is a bit of a long haul for me. 'Twould depend on the terms and conditions! :-) ... and the date. As soon as you've got an idea of the arrangements, drop me an e-mail and I'll see if it's feasible.
