Anyone know anything about "Ezeedrone" reeds for U.P.'s?

Anyone know anything about "Ezeedrone" reeds for U.P.'s?

I just found this website called "Pipe dreams" and they offer these tunable drone reeds for my Uilleann Pipes. They're not very expensive and I am curious if anyone else has tried them out? They're web page boasts of they're product being used by many pro's and world wide. They're out of Glasgow, Scotland. The reeds look pretty nice and relatively easy to install, I'm just hoping for some feedback?

I am not a piper, but I have seen and heard the reeds, because a piper friend brought some back from Willy Week this year. They sound great, and he says they're extremely stable. The only issue he had was that they are too big to fit in his tenor drone, I think.

A very well respected, gigging piper recommended them to me. He thought they were brilliant because he didn't have to worry so much about the drones cr*pping out during gigs in random places all over the world. I haven't tried them myself but keep meaning to -- just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have ezeedrone reeds in my smallpipies and have played them in my highland pipes as well. I would recommened them as they have a good tone, and when in tune they tend not 2 move to much, so are perfect for performances.

Re: Anyone know anything about "Ezeedrone" reeds for U.P.'s?

EzeeDrone has been around for years making reeds for Highland pipes, then introduced reeds for Scottish smallpipes, then Scottish border/lowland pipes, and most recently uilleann pipes.

Their long experience with Highland pipes has led them to make a variety of sizes/lengths of reeds to suit various makes of Highland drones. Likewise they make a large number of different sizes of reeds for Scottish smallpipes, due to the widely differening specs of various makers.

Uilleann drones' internal dimensions are even more variable, I would wager, and EZ hasn't had much length of experience with the gamut of uilleann variety yet.

In time I'm sure that EZ will make a wide variety of uilleann reeds to suit most of the various makes of drones out there.
But at this time, at least the last I heard, they only made one model of uilleann Concert Pitch drone reeds.
So, as all uilleann pipers know, any given reed will work in a fairly small percentage of the drones in existance.

That's why you'll hear some uilleann players say that they have great success with EZs and you'll hear other uilleann players say that EZs are worthless. It all depends on the internal dimensions of your particular drones and whether or not they suit EZs.

Here's my story which goes to show how these things can go:
I bought an antique set of Scottish smallpipes, beautiful little things all mounted in ivory. I tried various EZ smallpipe reeds in the drones and they all played far too sharp, giving notes like C and C#, a third higher than the note I wanted, A.

So one day on a whim I stuck an EZ uilleann concert pitch bass drone reed in the SSP bass drone and voila! It played a perfect A=440. Then thinking hmmm I stuck the EZ uilleann baritone drone reed in the SSP tenor drone and once again a perfect A=440!
So now I have these 100-year-old SSPs humming along beautifully with EZ uilleann Concert D drone reeds in them.
They "strike in" reliably, are completely stable, and sound fantastic.

I wonder if I showed up at the shop with my pipes, they'd let me have a go at them before I bought them.

If you go into the Piping centre and ask nicely they will probably let you try them out.

Re: Anyone know anything about "Ezeedrone" reeds for U.P.'s?

I have used thes in my Uilleann D drones for a while and find them fine. The main issue talking to other Uilleann pipers is that some prefer the tone of cane reeds, I have not heard of anyone who has had problems with them. Tommy at Ezeedrones is very helpful. If you were thinking of visiting the shop it would be worth phonong and talking to them. I had excellent service from them and the drones stay well in tune with no humidity or temperature problems unlike my chanter reed. The tone issue is obviously personal but the reliability for me outweighs the slight difference in sound.

I'm really tempted to try these, I've developed a certain resentment for drones since my bass cut out during an all-ireland pipe final I did back in 2007, and other various concerts I've done.
So, since I'm feeling rather frivolous, I might buy 'em!

will let you all know what I think, being the esteemed piper that I am :P
