Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Anyone interested in the British folk scene would be well advised to get hold of this free compilation which was available with 'The Independent' newspaper today, but has also been made free to download by the two labels concerned. Musicians include Lau, Mawkin:Causley, Spiers and Boden, Kris Drever, Rachel McShane and Chris Wood.

Thanks for the link Floss. I have some of these; they are all a good listen.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

There is no such thing as a British scene. There is a Scottish, English and Welsh. Navigator are an English label with token Kris and Aiden because they play with Martin Green. I'm sure it's a decent collection for those into that sort of thing though.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Don't be a pillock, CO! I was using 'British' as shorthand because this is an international site.

Still, why am I bothering arguing with someone who can't even spell his own user-name correctly? :)

# Posted on November 13th 2009 by MacCruiskeen

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Well I was going to suggest CO was being a little grumpy but after that post from Floss I don't think I will bother now.

Why don't we bring Irish music into the mix too and call it the British Isles folk scene?

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Floss the Tethers pulls me up on user-name spelling, now that's a cracker.

# Posted on November 13th 2009 by bogman

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

And you are the pillock is you use the term British as shorthand.

# Posted on November 13th 2009 by bogman

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Warning - pedant alert.

CO, I can certainly spell 'Floss the Tethers' correctly. How otherwise would you spell 'floss', 'the' or 'tethers'? How would you spell 'conscientious' for that matter? Sorry, I know the answer to that one.

Let me repeat, in very simple terms, why I used the word 'British. It's simply because there are those in other parts of the world (as evinced by many threads here) who don't get the fact that GB consists of England, Scotland and Wales.

NCfA - 'British Isles' just will not do. It's deeply offensive to the Irish. (See numerous threads passim.)

Jayz, I post a freebie here and I'm having to defend the use of just one word in my opening sentence. Thanks heavens said word wasn't bodhrán!

# Posted on November 13th 2009 by MacCruiskeen

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Maybe more than the Irish find 'British Isles' offensive.

If other parts of the world do not realise that GB is made up of Scotland, Wales and England then, frankly they need educated.

I am aware that many Irish people would be offended by the term "British Isles". And in that one sentence you have just proved our point!

I do not consider myself as British and I don't find it acceptable lumping Scottish, English and Welsh music together as the one scene. I think it is disrespectful.

Having said that I do like lots of English folk music and think it gets a bit of a bad rap. Chris Wood is excellent, aleit I am not overly keen on the song on this collection. I love "One in a Million" and am listening to it just now. Becky Unthank also has a great voice.

I won't bother posting similar links in the future.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Och come on Floss, it's good of you to post the link. You know fine everything here ends in controversy. Every ill considered word is a knicker twister.

'You know fine everything here ends in controversy.'

No, it doesn't, CO, and this thread would not have done so if you'd kept your oar in the boathouse!

Think on. Don't feel the need to comment on everything.

I don't. You think on. You brought up the controversy with your British folk p!sh.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Good grief! For sure Floss, I have no idea why you bother going out of your way to post helpful links, just to get abuse in return. Incidentally, ‘conscientious objector’ [I've fixed the spelling just to raise the tone a bit], according to his bio is opposed to: “…charlatans, purists and narrow thinkers. I am a Gael not a Brit..”

So he’s got it in for the traditionalists too! What can we say about people like this? The fact is that “British Folk” is an internationally used term (referring to the tradition stemming by and large from the 60s folk singing revival). BIG DEAL! Get over it! I remember a similar ruckus on this site about the use of the (perfectly correct) word ‘flautist’. Honestly, some people never have a thought they don’t feel compelled to express.
Thanks for the music, by the way.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Whistleblower, my first post was far from abusive. Any later comments were in reply to the abuse dished out to myself.

Can you explain why my bio leads you to say I'm against traditionalists?

"Honestly, some people never have a thought they don’t feel compelled to express" - Having the opinion that Scottish, English and Welsh music shouldn't all be lumped together can hardly be seem as just a passing thought. I've every right to express an opinion just as you have.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Thanks for pointing us towards this, Floss. I know few of the artists, John McCusker, Sandy Wright and Kris Drever being exceptions.

McCusker is a fiddler who first came to prominence at a young age when he replaced Brian McNeill in Scotland's Battlefield Band. I came across guitarist/singer Sandy Wright when we shared a concert billing of three duets: me (mandolin) with my guitarist, he with talented Scots fiddler Amy Geddes, and Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen. A personal thrill for me was when we all joined up on stage at the end, me saying to myself, childlike, "I'm playing with Brian Finnegan!" over and over.

Kris Drever is a singer and guitar accompanist making waves in Scotland. He was part of the group Fine Friday with Anna-Wendy Stevenson (fiddle) and Nuala Kennedy (flute). Currently in acclaimed group Lau. His father, Ivan Drever from Orkney, is also a folk musician with many solo recordings and collaborations with duos and groups, most notably perhaps with fiddler Duncan Chisholm. One of Drever senior's LPs can be seen in the music blog The Music Gatherer:
http://themusicgatherer.blogspot.com/2009/10/knowe-o-deil-vikings-bride-attic.html

I'll enjoy giving a listen to all the tracks on this download and, as ever, I'm grateful to you. Thanks.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Floss. I'd like to take issue with your use of the word link.

In Scotland the sausage of choice is not link but "square". Your lack of sensitivity in using the term link I find deeply offensive.

Please do bear in mind that I am no the only thin-skinned tosser on this group and try harder not to cause offense the next time you take the time to post something informative and helpful.

# Posted on November 14th 2009 by bogman

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

it wasn't aimed at you as such. It was aimed at the general practice of taking offense for the sake of it. There is quite a lot of that on this board at various times.

But I'm not all that bothered if you are thin skinned enough to be offended.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

I'm offended by your screen name, Chris. I find it horribly insulting that you're characterizing pitchforks as rambling when in fact, pitchforks are either running at full speed with purpose or leaning against barn walls doing nothing.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

And I find your screen name elitist. I mean "The Silver Spear". Ha! Firstly, what have you got against wood? And, secondly, "The" - like, what? You're the only one? Ha! I say. "Ha!"

You find *my* screen name elitist when yours is "ethical blend?" You're like one of those lefty, hippie, liberal elitists who look down their noses at the rest of us and think they have the right to run our lives and who want to ruin our country with immigration, sex, and drugs.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

ramblingpitchfork, I don't know how you took it from my statement "There is no such thing as a British scene" that I was offended in some way. The outpouring of name-calling and abuse that followed was surprising and could be taken as offensive but you and your pals are not worth it.

# Posted on November 15th 2009 by bogman

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Thanks for the link. It wasn't the use of the word British that set me thinking, it was the selection of artists names you chose exemplify what was on the download to people who come here.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

CO:

It came across to me as your sensibilities being outraged. Maybe you were not offended but just being pedantic in a detached way.

Floss' opening post wasn't an essay on why there is a single monolithic "British" folk scene. It was a quick note with a link to some free music. If the music had consisted of Hungarian, Polish, german and French artists and Floss had used the phrase "European" folk scene would anyone have felt the need to point out that ther is no "European" folk scene,. merely "Polish", German" etc?

I doubt it. But the issue would have been exactly the same.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

BTW, not sure who "my pals" are.

I know emily (Silverspear) in real life, effcetively meeting via this newsgroup. And I think I kmow who NoCause is (but I don't hink I've catully met him).

I like many of the cyberpersonalities on this group that I've never met in the RW, not sure if that qualifies them as "pals".

I don't think of people as "antipals" within this newsgroup becasue I've disagreed with them in a particular thread.

If you are implying a clique, I don't think one actually exists.

- chris

# Posted on November 15th 2009 by ramblingpitchfork

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

No I wasn't referring to Emily, I know her in real life as well. I was referring to the others who resorted to insults and cheap shots. As it happens I really don't like Scottish trad being lumped in as British. That is the reason I said something. Not to be pedantic, not to be rude to the OP, though judging by his reaction he took serious issue. It's not anti British, it's just that it's a case of chalk and cheese. That's a common opinion here and I'm surprised you didn't know that. Maybe the Oran Mor is a wee bubble. If that's the case you're welcome to it.

Re: Navigator/Reveal Records Mixtape - free download

Hi Chris - no I don't think we have ever met although if I am ever in Glasgow on a Wednesday night I will be sure to pop down to the session. Meanwhile you are more than welcome along at the Friday night session. In the last couple of weeks or so it seems to have been invaded by StJtG CCE members anyway. Honestly - the cheek of it!! :-)

CO:

Reflecting on this last night, I believe that the final sentence of my opening post was unecessary and OT and I would like to apologise for it to yourself and to the group.

I stand by the rest of my post. I still think the pedantry in this thread was/is up for mockery. But the last line of my post undermined my own message and added to any ill feeling.

The oran mor is not a "wee bubble", but i'm glad to be welcome to it anyway.

I wouldn't have cared if your message had been anti-British. That's not the point.

NoCause. Can't make the friday session because of family commitments. Wed is pretty much the only night I go out (except for St J's on a mon which isn't <I> Really<I> a night out :-)) , I avoid things at the weekend.

Can I not be American since I might want Boulder, CO, to secede from the USA. It wouldn't be a big deal since I am sure the vast majority of Americans wouldna mind if it became properly "The People's Republic of Boulder." We could take Portland, OR as a sister state.
