I'd have said Kora was closer to a harp. The ngoni is the senegalese/malian instrument that's like a banjo. Both beautiful instruments that can make some great music.

I've heard it said (jokingly) that learning to tune the kora is harder than learning to play it. They pretty much have to tune it every few minutes.

For similar reason in quawwali music sitar was quickly replaced with harmonium, once an opportunity arose - in traditional line-up over half of the time was devoted do tuning a score of sitars.

I don't think so Ptarmigan
Originally, it was a digging implement

Is there a more phallic instrument than the kora?

Remember you asked, Bren - if it was merely rhetorical, my apologies:

I seen Toumani Diabate live a while back, one of the best concerts I've ever been to, absolutely stunning show. I implore all of you on here to buy some of his music.

Re: Hey, did you know that originally, the BANJO was actually a MELODIC instrument!

Banjo's a mostly melodic instrument now. Don't you really mean harmonic?

But since you're taking a dig at the banjo and obviously don't really know what you're talking about, the kora's not really part of the banjo's lineage. The akonting/ekonting on the other hand...

Hey hey hey, easy on the banjos. It could be worse. It could be one of those giant reverberating podium thing that you play with hammers. :-P

IMO, the Kora is one of the few Third World instruments for which one doesn't have to make allowances.

It is the eland of the musical savannah, while the banjo is the moondog.

Joking aside folks, did you see that Steve Martin is in the Charts for his Banjo playing?

My banjo is always very melodic; nobody at our sessions would ever disagree with that because it is also very heavy!

I was a little disappointed that the "Wangcaster" didn't have a whammy bar...
