What do you do with unused instruments?

What do you do with unused instruments?

Some of us have narrowed our approach over the years, focusing on one instrument to the exclusion of another. When you stop playing/using an instrument, what do you do with it?

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Store it or Sell it. for example when I bought my tenor banjo, I sold my 5 string. It was just too much to play both, the 5 string banjo requires a lot of time to work out arrangements and to learn melody lines because every string is tuned to a different interval. It just wasn't worth the time, since I was really getting into the fiddle at the time, fiddle and tenor banjo work really well, if I want to all of a sudden pick up a banjo one day and fiddle the next.
I keep a nylon string acoustic stored under my bed, despite the fact that I play guitar quite often, i only use my steel string these days, and I only play DADGAD to the exclusion of standard tuning. since fingerstyle/ classical playing is more of a standard tuning thing for me, and I don't do any of that stuff with other people, it's been tossed on the backburner. I however won't sell it, because I could potentially feel like re pursuing classical guitar, at least during a period when I'm not gigging too much.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

You could always sell it.
I've got to get around to doing that myself, lol, I've got four mandolins and haven't hardly played any since I got my tenor banjo...Can't really handle shrinking the scale length that much..tough to get rid of em though-gifts n whatnot.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

If it's small, keep it.

If it's large and takes up a lot of space, get rid of it (sell, lend or give away).

If it's worth a lot of money, or you're hard up, and you're unlikely to use it again, sell it.

If it's not worth much money then, unless you're really hard up, don't bother selling it. If somebody wants it, give it to them - or if you think you might want it back, lend it. If you're really keen to de-clutter, give it to a charity shop (I think charity shops are great, but I generally prefer to see an instrument go directly to its new owner).

If its sentimental value is greater than its financial value, keep it.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I was a serial instrument hopper for years, going from French horn, to mountain dulcimer, to bodhran, to clarsach, whistles, and then finally arriving at insanity/enlightenment with the uilleann pipes.

I think my parents still have the dulcimer and the bodhran, as my father is a serial instrument collector and likes having things like that around the house, even if nobody plays them. We sold the French horn after a while. I swore for years that I'd go back to it but never did and those things are too expensive to have lying around your house doing nothing (I know people with sets of pipes which do this and that's even worse since French horns are easier to get a hold than pipes...anyway). After I realized that the pipes were going to suck my soul and I'd never have time for anything else, I sold the harp. I also sold my first half set of pipes, even though I had initially wanted to keep them in case I ever ran into someone who wanted to borrow a set to learn on or something like that. Being skint is a great motivator.

I was sad to sell all of those instruments, as I felt somewhat attached to them. But when I asked myself if I was really going play them, no really, be realistic, the answer was no. As I said, my dad likes collecting instruments for the sake of it but I move too much and live in small flats, so if I'm not playing it, I'm not keeping it. Unless it's a sh*tty tin whistle, which all seem to breed and live in my car.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I donated about half a dozen items from my "flute" collection to a local school's music program. I say "flute" because it consisted of an assortment of flute-related wind instruments (quena, chinese bamboo flute, etc.) All playable but certainly no collector's item or professional-grade item. Keeping those or if I do decide to part with them, I'll be sure I get some $$ in return.

Carol - That's a wonderful thing to do with unwanted instruments.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I very rarely ever get rid of an instrument, except to raise money to buy a new one. Even then, it's usually under spousal duress, so to speak. I had to give up the mandolin twenty-three years ago bcause of injury, but I haven't parted with it. Hope springs eternal.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

If I got a hold of a harp, I would definitely consider selling my classical guitar.

# Posted on November 9th 2009 by Earl Cameron

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I'm always reluctant to sell anything expensive knowing that most likely
I will never be able to get another one. But the cheap ones are almost
not worth the hassle of trying to sell them.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Even if you don't play the instruments anymore, you can still put them to a good use.

I use my vintage Martin guitar for storing chestnuts, and the Olwell flute as a prodding stick to close the curtains in my bedroom.

(I'll get my coat.)

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Piano accordion has multiple uses, but once you have kids they tend to get their fingers stuck in the bellows, Better replace it with pedal harmonium.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Hammer dulcimer is used to keep two fiddles on. Harp in the bathroom draped with a nice green cloth. Two bouzoukis, three guitars and a banjo hanging on the wall. two and a half (sorry SS) sets of Uilleanns in the book case. GHB, saxophone and seven instrument cases under the specially adapted bed. about a dozen assorted flutes and whistles in a cardboard box near to hand. Some of these instruments occasionally get played, restrung, polished, dusted, tuned. I swapped a clarinet for a trumpet but could play neither. No idea what happened to the trumpet. I play a fiddle I made myself, despite having spent a fortune on buying instruments over the years. The pipes get played, but not often enough. Drawers full of strings, bits of wood, bone, metal, tools, tuners...oh, and cassettes.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

My old guitar now hangs proudly on the wall of my favorite pub for anyone to use. I enjoy seeing it there. I've given instruments away my entire life. When I upgrade my current banjo I will give it away too. I rarely buy top dollar stuff.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I'm fairly unsentimental about instruments and if an instrument isn't being played I put it up on Ebay.

Over the years I've aquired quite a few instruments but as I get older I have to face the fact that practice time is limited and it doesn't make any sense for me to spread that time out over a load of different things and be mediocre on all of them.

So I've got myself down to the minimun things I actually play regularly.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Planters, doorstops, cat toys, gag gifts, you name it.
My uilleanns are currently part of my distinctively distinctive mailbox.

I take them down at first snow, and put out the trombone for Yule.

Next question?

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

My wife finally put her foot down and made a rule: I have to sell an instrument before I can buy another one. I've been stuck on fiddle for a long time now so the guitar, mandolin, 5-sting banjo, viola, cello, ukuleles, bass and assorted harmonicas and whistles mostly stay in the closet. CarolWhitaker's solution is wonderful -- I'll have to explore that.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I land up with a lot of student violins that aren't worth the effort of sorting. The solution is to turn them into table lamps and sell them at car boot sales. Student outfits come in at £30, and the lamps sell for £40. So all the rental in between is pure profit!

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Donate them to the bodhoran / shakey-egg "player" and tell them to learn an instrument.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I had a Windsor Zither banjo which I bought in Southsea in about 1968, and although I used to play it, in recent years it has hung on the wall gathering dust. This year I decided to dispose of it by donating it to Emmaus (normally I never get rid of ANYTHING). This charity is a few miles out of town, and I left it there and rushed away before I could change my mind. A few weeks later, I was chatting to a friend who now lives a few houses down the road from me, and she said: "Oh, I bought a banjo.." And yes, it was my one. She had seen it there, and gone home, then felt a strange compulsion to go all the way back to buy it. So this banjo must have supernatural powers, exerting influences over the forces that shape its destiny. Spooky, huh!!!

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I am unsentimental about instruments and sell them when I no longer need them or have decided that I don't want to devote the time, effort, and energy into learning how to play them.

"Donate them to the bodhran/shaky egg player and tell them to learn an instrument." LOL (that was funny)

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Besides, if you keep looking long enough and hard enough, you can probably find another instrument somewhere to replace the one which you sold and/or gave away.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

What is it about these intense attachments that we get for random stuff that we know, deep in our hearts, that we really don't need? I tried to give away the "good" clarinet; it came back eventually, and I still have it. Like I'm suddenly going to start playing in a klezmer band or a swing orchestra? Right. There are only so many hours in the day, and the fiddle soaks up all the spare time.

There has to be a lot more going on there than undue optimism.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Sell, then store. It tests whether the buyer truly wants the instrument. Here's how this works:

Buyer: Look, you have my money, now hand it over.
Seller: Why?
Buyer: Because you have my money. Now give.
Seller: I don't think so. Not now.
Buyer: Why?
Seller: Okay, we're just going in circles. I'll speak with you in a month. After you've apologized.

And so on.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

A long time ago now, I sometimes went to a bring-a-bottle party with bottles of foul home brew. These I would offload among all the other drink, and then I would pick up a nice bottle of wine and slink off to the far end of the house, affecting innocence.

So that's the obvious thing to do with unused instruments: leave them next to the seat of a player who's gone to the loo or something, and depart with one or more nice ones.

Unfortunately, such players tend to be exceedingly vengeful and also cunning. I don't know how often they actually recover their instruments, but they *always* seem to know where they are, and who's got them. They hunt in packs, and have spies from Clare to here. You can certainly never play in public or on YouTube with the loot.

Therefore, sadly, I do not recommend this practice.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I do confess to giving away a banjo at a Christmas white elephant gift exchange. The person that ended up with it seemed intrigued by it. I think that we took home a nice bottle of booze, so it was a successful evening.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

I do have several other BSO's (banjo shaped objects) and apart from the one that actually plays OK, I disassemble them with the intention of reassembling the pieces into a really amazing Frankenbanjo. I've also bought parts on eBay and added them to this collection, but somehow nothing ever gets put back together. I do this with cameras too (but not with fiddles or mandolins you'll be pleased to hear)

# Posted on November 10th 2009 by RichardB

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Richard, you should beware of meddling with such things. If your Frankenbanjo should get struck by a bolt of lightning then the consequences would be too horrible to contemplate.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Yes, it could make its own way to the local session, while being chased by ignorant villagers with cudgels and firebrands!

# Posted on November 10th 2009 by RichardB

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

If the double basses are three quarter size, then you have either 5-1/4 basses or 10-1/2 basses (because they are double basses). However, if they are full size double basses, then you either have seven basses or fourteen basses--depending on how you wish to calculate it.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Frankenbanjo sounds like a wonderful idea for a musical parody of Frankenstein. Who is going to write the script and direct this "thing"?
Speaking of parodies of Frankenstein, have any of you ever seen the movie "Frankenhooker"?

# Posted on November 10th 2009 by fauxcelt

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Then there was the movie "Frankenweenie" about the little boy whose dog accidentally gets cut in half and he somehow puts the two halves of the dog back together. Then he re-animates the dog by hooking it up the battery of his parent's car (if I remember the plot correctly).

# Posted on November 10th 2009 by fauxcelt

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Frankenweenie is a short by Tim Burton that he did for Disney in the beginning. Burton has plans to re-do it into a full blown motion picture after completing Alice in Wonderland.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Fauxcelt, we have one quarter-size bass and six three-quarter size basses. And it's a good thing these instruments were made by luthiers, not mathematicians.

# Posted on November 11th 2009 by Greg the Piano Tuner

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

Yes, Greg, I agree. The idea of an instrument designed and made by a mathematician is scary.
I think the mathematicians should stick to their math (said the man who is neither a luthier or a mathematician).
I have met and played music with mathematicians who were perfectly capable musicians.
If you have one quarter-size bass and six three-quarter size basses, then you should have 4-3/4 basses--if I have done the calculations correctly.
For the record, I play a three-quarter size acoustic bass.
At one of the monthly meetings of the local old time folk music group, we were joking about having two bass players and 1-1/2 basses because both myself and the other bass player present both had three-quarter size basses.

Re: What do you do with unused instruments?

being in the 40's I have a lot of friends with kids.
So, personally, if one of the kids expresses an interest in music, I just give it to my friend.
There is a catch tho!!!
If and when the kids decide it is not for them, I get the instrument back, and do the same all over again.
Keeps the instrument alive, and in the family!
(tho sometimes not in the same condition!!! LOL)
