I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Hi
I hope someone can help.
I've got Hannigan and Ledsam's Low Whistle book which has a tune called "Green Fields of America" and I'm having some trouble getting a feel for it. I've tried searching You Tube for recordings, but although there's quite a few tunes with that name, nothing is even remotely close.
The book comes with a CD, but unfortunately only half of the tunes are recorded, and this isn't one of them.
I don't want to give up on this tune as some of the phrases are starting to make sense, so if anyone can point me to a recording I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Fiona

Isn't that the air? Fair haired boy.
Your book may have a discography.

I think Fiona means this reel:

...and not this song:

The reel is the middle tune on this set:

Enjoy! I like playing this one myself.

Fair play SWFL. Seems I remebered that particular book having a few airs.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Sure, and they should too, they sound lovely on the low whistle.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Fiona, let us know if you are able to suss this one out.
I have wondered about that transcription myself. I grabbed my copy of the book & it says the tune is from the playing of Liam O'Flynn. I am not sure where he may have recorded this tune.
But Liam is grand. I really enjoy "The Full Set" broadcast of him w/ Paddy Glackin;

By the way Fiona, thanks.

So when did Liam play this tune?

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

FWIW, Joe Burke has an air called the Green Fields of Canada on his recording http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/967
Maybe a contender?

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

The song which SWFL linked is alternatively known as "Green Fields of Canada". Both (Canada & America) are in the lyrics. Thanks for the info Wounded Hussar. I will give Joe Burke a listen.
The Low Whistle Book comes with a CD which has some of the lessons & tunes from the book, but not all. Someone once told me he had a CD with all the recording, but I never listened to his copy. Online I cannot find anything about a 2nd CD, except that it is to be released, 'in the future'
I looked on Steafan Hannigan's MySpace site http://www.myspace.com/steafan
He mentions The Low Whistle DVD out Fall 07. I cannot find the DVD either.
It's a mystery. I hope someone turns up a recording by Liam O'Flynn.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Incidentally, and some non-scientific info at that, Old Timey American fiddlers play the reel and call it "...America" not Canada. Of course, it's all sauced up with appropriate Appalachian style sounds.

One of my favourite tunes.

SWFL, I must say you've lost me. Are you saying Liam O'Flynn plays this reel? If so, do you know where I might find a recording?

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

We like this tune too and play it at the end of a set: Trip to Birmingham (Jackie McDermotts), the Abbey Reel, Green Fields of America. Then the clever ones switch tempo and play Green ... as a jig too. I haven't mastered it yet...

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Would that be Josie McDermott's?

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Is everyone discussing the tune mentioned by Fiona or a different tune w/the same name?
I have the dots too, but what I really want is a recording. ;)

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

I think everyone is talking about the tune mentioned by Fiona, as clarified by SWFL above. I reckon you can tell it's the right tune we're talking about because, as it happens, GF of A does have a very strange rhythmic and chordal pattern.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

The Low Whistle book mentions that the transcription is taken from the playing of Liam O'Flynn. My question, pardon the obsession, I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording.
I didn't listen to the Comhaltas clip earlier. I will now.
Thanks ethical!

The Low Whistle Book transcription says it is an air & it seems to have no time signature at all. [The notes/bars have unusual counts] Has anyone else seen those dots?

Cheers!

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

No Sir Random, I'm fairly sure Andy Irvine sings the ballad "The Green Fields of America" with Planxty on their 'Cold Blow and the Rainy Night' album, but the reel is not played.

Guys! Gals! I'm not lying! It's the 2nd reel right here! Really! Scout's honor! ;-)

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Whoops! Cross post Random!

It's well played too by Mr. CiarĂ¡n MacFeidmhlimidh. (Yes, I copied and pasted his name from the Comhaltas site.)

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Does Liam play a solo on that track?
I am actually more familiar with the reel than the song.
The Low Whistle Book may have given the wrong name to it's air.

;)

Thanks for the clip! Now I do have a copy.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

Great question, guess I need to listen to that later when I get home, eh? I wonder if it's on the iPod in the car...I'll check at lunch.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

In any case I need to get myself a copy of 'Cold Blow& Rainy Night' Liam's grand.
Cheers,
Ben

Planxty/Liam O'Flynn

Found this in an Amazon review;
. . . The other two Irvine contributions merit more detailed mention: "Baneasa's Green Glade" is an account of his time in Eastern Europe and is appropriately paired with
the Bulgarian dance tune, "Mominsko Horo", the beginning of which will cause sundry and all to gape,"Is that really just one mandolin?"; and the cathartic climax of the album,
"The Green Fields of Canada", which features a moving uillean pipes solo by Liam Og O'Floinn.

Re: I've got the dots, but what I really want is a recording

It's a slow air on the flat pipes. I particularly like the sound of the bellows valve on that recording

grand, thanks! I can hardly wait
